King's Softball takes Two From Lycoming

KING'S SOFTBALL TAKES TWO FROM LYCOMING

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Lycoming College Saturday in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

King's won the first game 5-4 before taking the nightcap 3-2.  With the sweep the Monarchs improved to 14-11 on the year while the Warriors slipped to 14-16.

In the opener, King's took a 2-0 first inning lead when Samantha Bloom walked and scored on a RBI double by Amy Kowalczyk. Debra Renner then followed with a run-scoring single. 

After Lycoming scored two in the third inning and one in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, King's responded with three  runs inn the bottom of the fifth. Helana Supsic led off with a walk, moved to second on a bunt by Bloom, and scored when Kowalczyk reached base on a Lycoming error. Renner followed with a RBI double before Alizabeth Ellsworth pushed the lead to 5-3 by driving in the Monarchs' final run with a double of her own.

Renner was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI while Ellsworth was also 2-for-3 with a RBI. Kowalczyk finished 1-for-2 with a double  and RBI while scoring two runs.

Robyn Klingerman was the winning pitcher for King's, allowing two runs, one earned on four hits with two strikeouts in tossing the final three innings. Renner started for King's and pitched well in her first career appearance, yielding two earned runs on three hits over the first four innings of the game.

In the nightcap Lycoming held a 1-0 lead into the third inning when the Monarchs scored all the runs they would need. Supsic led off with a base hit, Bloom reached on a bunt single,  before Kowalczyk drew a walk to load the bases. Renner knocked in a run with an infield grounder before Ellsworth drove in two more runs with a double.

Allie Herbert picked up the pitching win for King's, tossing a complete-game four-hitter while striking out two batters.

King's will next travel to Madison, NJ on Saturday to face FDU-Florham in the final Freedom Conference doubleheader of the season.
