KING'S SOFTBALL FORGES DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT WITH ALBRIGHTWILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College softball team closed out the regular season with a doubleheader split with visiting Albright College on Sunday afternoon at the Betzler Athletic Complex. Albright won the first game 7-3 before King's came back to take the nightcap 3-2 in eight innings.
King's now heads to the Freedom Conference Tournament with a 17-12 record while Albright finishes their season with a 19-14 record.
The Lions took a 5-0 lead in game one by plating two runs in the first, two in the second, and one in the fourth. King's cut the deficit to 5-2 in the fifth when
Amy Kowalczyk singled through the right side to score Helena Supsic and
Shelby Eby. Albright responded with two more runs in the sixth and the Monarchs scored their final run in the seventh when
Samantha Bloom singled home Eby.
King's bats were kept quiet for most of the game by a stellar pitching performance by Sammi O'Connor. O'Connor allowed three runs on six hits and struck out 11 to gain the complete game victory. Kowalczyk and Eby each had two hits for the Monarchs. Bloom and Rachel DeTore each had a hit.
Robyn Klingerman gave up four runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of work to take the loss.
Allison Herbert allowed three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of relief.
In game two the Lions got on the board with a run in the first innings. King's tied the game up in the bottom half of the innings when
Debra Renner knocked in Bloom with a RBI groundout to the shortstop. Albright took a 2-1 lead in the sixth but once again King's responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on second and third and one out
Nicole Turner hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Bloom.
Neither team was able to score in the seventh inning and the game went to extras.. In the top of the eighth King's kept the Lions off the scoreboard by retiring them in order. In the bottom of the inning the Monarchs were able to load the bases with no outs. After Turner hit an infield fly to the first baseman DeTore knocked in Bloom with a sacrifice fly that the center fielder caught in right-centerfield.
Samantha Bloom had two hits and scored all three runs for the Monarchs. Bloom pitched a complete game only allowing two runs on 10 hits and striking out two. Kowalczyk had three hits,
Brianna DiMaggio had two, and Turner had one for the Monarchs.
King's will be in action again on Friday when they begin play in the Freedom Conference Tournament at the Betzler Athletic Complex. King's will enter the tournament as the fourth-seed and will face top-seeded DeSales University at 10:00 a.m. If the Monarchs win they will play again at 4:00 p.m. Should they lose they will play at 2:00 in an elimination game. Misericordia and Eastern face each other at 12:00 p.m.
