King's Softball Drops 9-8 Decision to Scranton in Eight Innings, Game-Two Called for Darkness

KING'S SOFTBALL FALLS TO SCRANTON 9-8 IN EIGHT INNINGS, GAME-TWO CALLED FOR DARKNESS

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team dropped the opening game of a scheduled doubleheader 9-8 in eight innings to the visiting University of Scranton Thursday at McCarthy Stadium.  In the second game with the teams tied at 5-5 the contest was called of due to darkness. 

With the loss King's fell to 4-9 on the year while Scranton improved to 7-6.

In the opener King's fell behind 6-1 but scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to close to within 6-5.  Alizabeth Ellsworth, Brianna DiMaggio, and Helana Suspic all posted singles to load the bsaes. Samantha Bllom lofted a sacrifice fly to plate Ellsworth before Amy Kowalczyk reached base on a fielder's choice. Debra Renner then smacked a two run double to bring King's to within 6-4. Nicole Turner then delivered a RBI single trim the Scranton lead to 6-5. 

After Scranton scored two in the sixth, King's countered with two of its own when Ellsworth and Suspic walked. Kowalczyk then registered a two-run double to cut the score to 8-7.

In the bottom of the seventh King's tied the game at 8-8 when Turner blasted a solo home run to lead off the inning.

In the eighth the game shifted to the international tiebreaker and Scranton's Kaitlyn Pittsman was placed at second base. After moving to third on a bunt, Pittsman scored  on a RBI single from Christine Kiefer to give the Lady Royals a 9-8 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth King's DiMaggio was placed at second and moved to third on a bunt. King's appeared to tie the game when Bloom drilled a line drive up the middle but Scranton second baseman Stephanie Roman made an outstanding catch to save the run, giving King's two outs. The game would end when Kowalczyk flied out to left field for the final out.

King's returns to the field Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. home doubleheader against Eastern University in the Betzler Complex.
