FRANKLIN AND MARSHALL RALLIES FOR 2-1 VICTORY OVER KING'S IN NCAA FIRST ROUND
LANCASTER, PA -- The eighth-ranked Franklin and Marshall College field hockey team rallied to edge King's College 2-1 in an exciting NCAA Championship first round game on Wednesday at Tylus Field in Lancaster.
The Monarchs took an early lead when
Brianna DiMaggio scored her 15
th goal of the year in the fourth minute. DiMaggio scooped up a ball that bounced off a Diplomat defender and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one with a shot inside the right post to give King's a 1-0 lead. Franklin and Marshall responded with four straight penalty corners in a 90 second span but the Monarch defense was able to hold the Diplomats to just one shot that went wide.
In the 17
th minute Franklin and Marshall was able to tie the game when Erin Coverdale stole the ball in the Monarch offensive end of the field, dribbled around a couple of defenders and then rocketed a shot from the right wing that
Paige Tedik made a fantastic diving attempt to stop but the ball trickled off her pads and into the cage for a goal.
The Diplomats kept pushing for the go ahead goal with three shots in s 40 second span but the King's defense held tough keeping the ball out of the cage. Franklin and Marshall was able to score what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the 25
th minute when Sydney Cole's shot off a corner from Annie Horsley got deflected and pass the Monarch defense into the cage.
The Monarchs fought valiantly to get the game-tying goal but were unable to get a shot off against the highly touted Diplomat defense that entered the game with the 16
th ranked goals-against average in the nation.
Franklin and Marshall outshot the Monarchs 9-1 and held an 11-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Brianna DiMaggio had the lone goal for the Monarchs.
Paige Tedik made two saves in goal for King's while
Symantha Sharon had a defensive save.
The Monarch season comes to a conclusion with a 13-7 record. The Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Champions captured the program's third conference title and first since winning back-to-back title in 2006-07 after being picked to finish fifth in the conference preseason poll.
