KING'S WOMEN'S SOCCER SHUTOUTS PENN COLLEGE 4-0 IN SEASON OPENER
WILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College women's soccer team began the 2016 season on a high note when they shut out visiting Penn College 4-0 behind four first half goals on Thursday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.
The Monarchs improve to 1-0 with the win while the Wildcats fall to 0-1.
King's freshman
Danielle Putnam nearly scored just 90 seconds into the game when she had a breakaway down the left side of the field and only had the goalkeeper the beat but her shot went straight at the keeper who made the save. She had another breakaway about six minutes later but once again the Wildcat keeper was able to come up with a save. A couple minutes later King's once again almost scored the first goal of the season when
Amy Barge's free kick from 38 yards out just went high.
Putnam was able to find the back of the net for her first collegiate goal in the 13
th minute when she recovered a ball the Penn College keeper misplayed on a thru pass and knocked it into the empty net. She was then able to record her first collegiate assist when her cross from the left corner was headed in by
Allie Balotin in the 17
th minute.
The Monarchs increased the lead to 3-0 in the 28
th minute when
Savannah Tucker found
Allison Andrew on a cross from the right side who was able to bury the ball into the back of the net. Barge then scored King's fourth and final goal in the 30
th minute when she was able to sneak one past the keeper from 30 yards out.
King's was able to control possession for much of the game and they outshot the Wildcats 13-3 and had eight shots on goal compared to just two for Penn College. The Monarchs held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Danielle Putnam led King's with a goal and an assist in her first collegiate game.
Allie Balotin, Ally Andrew, and
Amy Barge added goals for the Monarchs while
Savannah Tucker had an assist.
Ally McMahon recorded her first collegiate win in goal making one save in one half of play.
Jess Schenfeld recorded one save in goal in relief.
The Lady Monarchs will return to action next Wednesday when they travel up Interstate 81 to Clarks Summit to face Clarks Summit University at 4:00 p.m.
