KING'S WOMEN'S SOCCER DROP FIRST GAME OF SEASON IN OVERTIME
WILKES-BARRE, PA --- Anna Kauffman scored her second goal of the game 3:47 into overtime to give the Juniata College women's soccer team a 3-2 victory over King's College on Saturday at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.
The Eagles improve to 2-2 on the season while the Monarchs drop their first game of the year to fall to 2-1.
Kristen Ryan gave King's a early lead in the 13
th minute when she played a corner kick short to
Allison Andrew on the left side, ran around her and received the ball back from Andrew and knocked the ball towards goal. The ball went untouched through a group of players and went pass the Eagle keeper into the right side of the net for a goal. The lead was short lived however as Juniata found an equalizer just under three minutes later when Kauffman scored her first goal of the game off a cross from the right side from Caroline Braas.
The Monarchs retook the lead in the 3th minute when
Seana Cleveland found
Mallory Fox on the left wing and Fox kicked a rocket towards the far post that beat the keeper and gave the Monarchs a 2-1 advantage. Fox nearly scored again in the 34
th minutes when
Amy Barge found her open off a corner kick but her shot just missed left of the goal.
King's continued to push offensively in the second half looking to increase their lead. Their best chance came in the 67
th minute when
Danielle Putnam found herself on a breakaway down the right side with just one defender and keeper to beat. Unfortunately for King's the Eagle defender was able to block her shot. Juniata was able to find the equalizing goal in the 79
th minute when Kauffman passed a ball back to Aubrie Christensen from the right baseline and then she found the bottom right of the net from 15 yards out.
In overtime the Eagles started with the ball and pressed right away having two shots in the first two minutes go wide. Kauffman was able to score the game-winner on a counter that found on in a 1v2 situation that she was able to sneak the ball pass the King's keeper and into the bottom right to end the game in heartbreaking fashion for the Monarchs.
King's was led by
Kristen Ryan and
Mallory Fox who scored a goal each while
Allison Andrew recorded an assist.
Ally McMahon took the loss in net making four saves and giving up two goals.
Jess Schenfeld started the game in goal for the Monarchs and allowed one goal before being replaced by McMahon at halftime.
Juniata outshot King's 13-6 after being outshot 3-1 in the first half. The Monarchs held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Monarchs will look to rebound from their first loss of the season on Wednesday when they host Susquehanna University at McCarthy Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
