KING'S FIELD HOCKEY DEALS JOHNSON & WALES 5-2 DEFEAT
DALLAS, PA --- The King's College field hockey team used a strong offensive performance to defeat Johnson & Wales University 5-2 on Saturday afternoon on the first day of the Misericordia Tournament at McGeehan Field in Dallas.
The Monarchs improve to 2-0 with the win while the Wildcats fall to 0-1.
Caitlin Wood got King's on the board first when she scored in the 17
th minute.
Kelsey Gabriele gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead in the 19
th minutes when she gathered her own rebound off her shot that was blocked by a Wildcat defender and knocked it into the back of the cage.
In the second half
Brianna DiMaggio continued her fantastic start to the season with two goals in a seven minute span. Her first goal came in the 51
st minute with the second coming in the 58
th minute to give the Monarchs a 4-0 lead. The Wildcats, who had not had many opportunities for shots in the first 59 minutes of the game thanks to a stifling King's defense, were able to score twice to cut the lead to 4-2. Their first goal came in the 60
th minute and then the second came three minutes later. King's was able to regroup and Gabriele knocked in her second goal of the game in the 69
th minute to set the final score.
King's was led by
Kelsey Gabriele and
Brianna DiMaggio who scored two goals each.
Caitlin Wood also had a goal for the Monarchs.
Paige Tedik got the win in goal making four saves.
The Monarchs had a 24-10 advantage in shots with 16 of the 24 being on goal. They also held a 14-7 advantage in penalty corners. Claire Nolan made 11 saves in goal for the Wildcats.
King's will be back in Dallas tomorrow afternoon for the second day of the Misericordia Tournament when they will face seventh ranked Salisbury University at 2:00 p.m. Salisbury defeated Misericordia 5-0 on Saturday. The Sea Gulls handed the Monarchs a 5-2 loss last year at the Misericordia Tournament in the first ever meeting between the two programs.
