LADY MONARCH SEASON ENDS WITH LOSS AT FDU-FLORHAM
MADISON, N.J. --- The King's College women's soccer team fell 3-1 to host FDU-Florham on Saturday afternoon in the team's season finale in Madison, N.J.
The Lady Monarchs season ends with an 8-6-2 overall record and a 3-4 mark in conference play. FDU-Florham improves to 12-6-0 overall and 4-3 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom.
King's recorded the first shot of the game early in the fifth minute but an attempt at goal by
Emily Harrington sailed wide. The Devils recorded the first shot on goal of the game in the 11th minute when
Elizabeth Nolen punched a shot from Kristina Ragolia up off the crossbar and away from the net.
Breanna Jacinto,
Stephanie Corea, and
Danielle Putnam each had their shots saved as the Lady Monarchs pushed for the first goal of the game in the middle 15 minutes of the half. However the Devils responded with a goal at the 29 minute mark when Amanda Croce headed in a rebound off the crossbar after a shot from Nathalia Gallo. FDU-Florham kept the pressure on right after the goal and added to their lead in the 33rd minute when Erica Martins scored off a cross from Lindsey Scarmozzino.
The Monarchs would not go away though and fought back to get on the board before halftime. That opportunity came early on in the 35th minute when King's was awarded a penalty kick.
Kristen Ryan calmly stepped up and converted the kick to cut the Devil lead in half. The Devils responded with a flurry of four shots in three minutes but the King's defense kept the ball out of the goal. The Monarchs pushed to tie the game right before half but a header from
Lauren Geiger was saved by the Devil keeper.
In the second half the teams went back-and-forth looking for the important fourth goal of the game. Unfortunately for the Monarchs the Devils were awarded a great opportunity at the 68 minute mark. After a Monarch foul in the box Missy Quinn scored on a penalty kick to give FDU-Florham a 3-1 lead. King's fought valiantly to make up the deficit but shots from Ryan, Harrington, and
Andrea Galvin were kept out of the back of the net as the Devils came away with the victory.
FDU-Florham took 25 shots compared to just 13 for King's but the shots on goal were a lot closer with the Devils holding a 12-8 advantage. The Devils held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Elizabeth Nolen made five saves in one half of work in goal while
Jess Schenfeld made four saves in relief.
The Lady Monarchs finish the season with the fewest goals allowed in a season in program history. The 13 goals allowed this year breaks the previous record of 21 that was recorded in 2015.
