LADY MONARCHS ICE HOCKEY FALLS TO LEBANON VALLEY 4-1
PITTSBURGH, PA --- Josée Aitken scored the first-ever goal for the King's College women's ice hockey team in a 4-1 loss to Lebanon Valley College on the second day of the Commonwealth Cup in Pittsburgh.
King's fell to 0-2 while the Dutchmen improved to 1-2-1 with the victory.
King's started strong after winning the opening faceoff and was able to get three shots on goal in the first couple of minutes. However, each time Jill Moffatt was able to come up with a save for Lebanon Valley. After a King's penalty halfway through the period the Monarch defense was able to keep the game scoreless despite a flurry of shots from the Dutchmen. The game remained scoreless until Nikki Lloyd was able to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead with 19 seconds remaining in the period.
In the second period Lebanon Valley scored twice in a span of 66 seconds midway through the period. The Dutchmen got an unassisted goal from Nina Pugliese before Taylor Borrelli found the back of the net with 9:21 left in the period.
Aitken put herself in the history books at the 6:41 mark of the third period when she received the puck from
Kellie Munro near the center line on the right side, drove towards goal, and then knocked in the rebound off her initial shot that blocked. A couple minutes later Munro nearly scored King's second goal but her shot went off the pipe. The Dutchmen increased the lead to 4-1 with a goal by Emma Stillwaggon with just under six minutes remaining.
The Lady Monarchs played another very competitive game in which they outshot Lebanon Valley 42-30 and forced Moffatt to make 41 saves in goal for the Dutchmen. Aitken and
Gracen Mahoney took seven shots each while Munro and
Caitlin Redden had six shots each.
Morgan Almon blocked five shots and
Kiva Sierra Stoltz made 26 saves in goal for the Lady Monarchs.
King's will be back in action next weekend when they make their home debut on Saturday and Sunday. The Lady Monarchs will host Elmira College for a weekend UCHC series. Both games will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.
