KING'S SOFTBALL OPENS FREEDOM PLAY WITH SWEEP OF DELAWARE VALLEY
DOYLESTOWN -- The King's College softball team opened the 2017 Freedom Conference season in successful fashion as the Monarchs posted a doubleheader sweep of host Delaware Valley College Saturday in Doylestown.
King's won the opener 2-0 then rallied to post a 4-3 victory in eight innings in the nightcap. With the win King's improved to 6-4 and 2-0 in conference play while the Aggies slipped to 1-2 and 0-2.
In the first game King's rode the arm of Samantha Bloom who tossed a nifty one-hitter. Â Bloom allowed only a fourth inning leadoff double and faced only 24 batters. Â Bloom struck out 12 hitters while walking two.
King's scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning when Bloom singled and later scored on a base hit by Megan Beaupre. The Monarchs added the final run of the game in the sixth when Wolk tripled and scored again on  a Beaupre single. Beaupre went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI.Â
In the second game, King's trailed 3-1 before score one in the fifth, one in the seventh, and the winning run in the eighth.
In the fifth, Bloom singled and scored on a one-out double by Ally DeVoir to cut the lead to 3-2. In the seventh Amber Saylor reached base on a leadoff error and later scored from second on a single off the bat of Rachael DeTore. In the eighth, Alizabeth Ellsworth drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a bunt by Brittany McNair, and then scored from third on a base hit from Saylor.
In the bottom of the eighth Bloom, who entered the game in relief in the seventh inning, retired three of four batters to end the game and pick up her second win of the day.Â
Beaupre was 2-for-3 with a RBI as the only multiple-hit player for the Monarchs. Saylor scored two runs and added the game winning RBI single. DeTore, Wolk, and Nicole Turner also added base hits.
King's is slated to host defending Freedom Conference champion Manhattanville Saturday at 1:00 PM in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
