KING'S SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH LYCOMING
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Lycoming College Tuesday in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
King's won the first game 11-7 while the Warriors took the nightcap 6-3. King's now stands at 12-10 on the year while Lycoming is 15-7.
In the opener Lycoming took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. But King's countered in the bottom half of the inning when Ally DeVoir and Samantha Bloom each walked and both later scored on a shallow single by Rachael DeTore. After an infield hit by Alizabeth Ellsworth loaded the bases, Taylor Norris lofted a fly ball to left field, which was misplayed by a Lycoming fielder, allowing three unearned runs to score as the Monarchs took a 5-2 lead.
Lycoming answered by scoring one run in the fourth and five more in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead.
King's tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom half when Beaupre doubled and scored on a double by DeTore. Ellsworth then drove in DeTore with an infield ground out to knot the score. Bloom then cracked a double to left center to plate Ellsworth as King's took a 8-7 lead. The Monarchs then forged ahead 9-7 when Bloom scored from third on a wild pitch.
King's pushed across the final two runs of the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Ellsworth and a Lycoming throwing error.
DeTore was 2-for-4 with three RBI while Beaupre went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Ellsworth was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Kristina Kocher picked up the pitching victory as the Monarchs; third hurler in the game. Kocher pitched one and two-third innings of scoreless softball.
In the nightcap King's fell behind 4-0 in the fourth. In the bottom half of the inning the Monarchs scored two runs on a RBI single by Ally DeVoir and a throwing error on Lycoming to trim the lead to 4-2.
After Lycoming added two more runs in the sixth, King's pushed across its final run in the seventh when Taylor Norris doubled and scored on a single by Amber Saylor.
Saylor was 3-for-4 with a RBI while Ellsworth, DeTore, Brittany McNair, and DeVoir all contributed base hits.
King's will travel to face Misericordia in a doubleheader Thursday at 2:00 PM in Dallas.
