King's College Set for Homecoming Weekend

SEVEN TEAMS IN ACTION

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – While it's the first day of fall, the King's College athletic teams are heating up for Homecoming Weekend. Volleyball, field hockey, men's and women's tennis, football and men's and women's soccer are all slated for weekend competition starting today when volleyball travels to York, Pa. for the York College Spartan Volleyball Classic. Follow the games online if you can't attend.

Volleyball
King's volleyball is coming off a 3-0 loss to Middle Atlantic Freedom opponent FDU-Florham to go 9-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Junior Rachel Miller was recently named MAC Freedom Women's Volleyball Player of the Week on Sept. 18, totaling 69 kills, 50 digs, 70 points and a .333 hitting percentage in the previous four matches. Miller's season total 165 kills currently puts her at second most in the conference.

The York College Spartan Volleyball Classic features four matches against York (8-4), Bethany (7-5), Saint Vincent (7-5) and La Roche (3-12). Matches start a 3 p.m. when King's takes on York and continue through Saturday morning.

Field Hockey
King's field hockey (1-5) looks to open MAC Freedom play versus Manhattanville (1-6) tonight. The contest is set to begin at 7:30 at McCarthy Stadium.

After a slow start to the 2017 season, the Monarchs secured its first win of the season against Immaculata this past Saturday. Senior Brianna DiMaggio led King's with a goal and an assist, while junior Kelsey Gabriele scored a goal and senior Selina Malacari recorded an assist. In net for the Monarchs, freshman Kayla Nailor recorded her first career shutout along with a career-high nine saves.

Manahattanville (1-6) is coming off a 5-3 loss to Saint Lawrence at the William Smith Classic. This will be the 28th meeting between the teams, with Manhattanville holding a 19-9 advantage since 1992. While the Valiants hold the overall advantage, King's has gone 9-3 against Manhattanville since 2006 and is 9-5 in Wilkes-Barre.

Field hockey then travels to Scranton on Sunday to face Marywood (1-5) at 1 p.m.

Tennis
Men's and women's tennis open dual match play on Saturday at 12 p.m. against Lycoming and have a pair of Sunday matches versus Penn College and Marywood at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively. All matches are played at Kirby Park.

The men's team recently competed in the King's Invitational where King's had four individual champions and two doubles champions. Sophomore Tyler Millan was crowned the number-two flight champion with freshman Austin Mackey taking the number-five flight, sophomore Cameron Tuck capturing the number-six flight and senior Jason Homschek finishing first in the number-seven spot. In doubles, Millan and Nathan Carl teamed to win the number-one flight.

After an undefeated weekend, Millan earned MAC Freedom Tennis Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career.

The Lady Monarch last competed in the King's Invitational on Sept. 10 and crowned two individual champions along with two runner-ups. Freshman Emily Fernandez had an impressive debut, winning the number-one singles flight and went second in the number-one doubles flight with teammate Julia Keppel. Sophomore Alyssa Santarelli also went on to win the fifth singles flight, while Martina Gale was second in the number-four flight.  

Due to her performance, Fernandez was named MAC Freedom Player of the Week.

Football
The King's College football team hopes to continue the momentum from a thrilling back-and-forth road win over Lebanon Valley College into its Middle Atlantic Conference matchup Saturday when the Monarchs host Lycoming College at 1 p.m. on King's Homecoming Day in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

King's (2-1, 1-1 MAC) pulled out a 44-39 win over Lebanon Valley on a last-minute touchdown after trailing the Flying Dutchmen 39-38. Senior Zach Whitehead accounted for 449 yards and five touchdowns and was named the MAC Football Offensive Player of the Week.

Lycoming (0-3, 0-2 MAC) is looking for its first win of the season following a 21-17 loss to MAC co-leader Albright College.

This is the 27th meeting between the teams with Lycoming holding a 17-8-1 advantage. Lycoming won 11 straight meetings from 1993-through-2003. Since then the Warriors have a 6-5 advantage but the Monarchs have won the last two games.

Men's Soccer
The Monarchs' soccer team (4-3) is on the road this Saturday, traveling to face Widener (2-2-2) at 5 p.m.

King's is coming off a 1-0 win over Cabrini where sophomore Alastair Dinnan notched up his first career goal. The victory also gave junior Owen Geedey his 17th career shutout, which now stands as the program record.

Freshman Liam McLoughlin is having a standout rookie campaign, leading the MAC in goals (10) and points (20). On the national level, McLoughlin's season goal total currently ranks him in third place in all of Division III.

Widener recently dominated Gwynedd Mercy, 5-1, for its second win of the season. The Pride scored four unanswered goals before the Griffins were able to score late in the second half.

Women's Soccer
After a long road trip, the Lady Monarchs (3-2-1) return home Saturday night to face Lebanon Valley (3-1-2) at 5 p.m.

Last game saw King's recording its first draw of the season, a 0-0 match with Lycoming. In a tough defensive battle, Lady Monarchs' goalie Elizabeth Nolan recorded her first career shutout while tallying six saves.

Sophomore Danielle Putnam currently leads King's with eight points and four goals for the season.

Lebanon Valley is coming off a solid 3-2 win over DeSales. The Dutchmen outshot the Bulldogs 19-10 with the game winning goal being made in the final six minutes.
