Monarch Football Game Notes – Albright

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 10, 2018) – King's College is coming off a big 51-7 win last weekend at Alvernia University, evening its record at 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC). The Monarchs will head right back to where they were last weekend, only about 10 minutes from Alvernia as King's takes on Albright College from Gene Shirk Stadium. The Lions are coming off their bye week, after falling to Wilkes University back on October 6 47-43 in Edwardsville, PA.

Last Time Out For King's: The King's College football team evened its record with a strong road performance Saturday, knocking off Alvernia University 51-7 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play from Alvernia Stadium.

The seven points allowed were the fewest that King's has allowed since October 4, 2014 in a 10-7 win over Lebanon Valley College, while the 102 total yards offensively were the fewest in the King's modern era of football dating back to 1993. The 46-point win was also the largest margin of victory since a 56-0 win over Susquehanna in 2005.

The defensive performance from the Monarchs was dominant, as they allowed only 30 rushing yards, six first-downs, 2.08 yards per play and held Alvernia to 1-to-12 on third downs.

King's finished with 533 total yards of offense, rushing for 220 while throwing for 313 including averaging 17.4 yards per reception. Klock finished 15-for-21 for 213 yards and two scores through the air, while adding two rushing touchdowns and 26 yards on the ground. Moore was 3-for-5 for 100 yards and a touchdown in relief action at quarterback.

Downes would finish his day with 133 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, and Clark added a career-high 33 yards for King's. Gabe Boccella finished with a team-high 88 yards receiving on three catches, while Curry posted three catches for 41 yards and a score. Gorospe added a career-high five receptions for 30 yards and his touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, Izuchukwu Mozie made seven stops and three for loss, while Mando Sallavanti finished with six tackles. Senior defensive end Devrin Baynard continued his strong season with 2.5 sacks, as he helped on an Antonio Rogers sack as well. Junior Mikal Butler recovered a fumble and broke up one pass, and freshman Glenn Mandere also defended one pass.

The Book on the Monarchs (3-3, 2-2 MAC):
  • King's comes into Saturday's game with the fifth-best scoring offense in the conference, averaging just over 31 points per game. KC is also third in the league in total offense, racking up over 415 yards per game on average.
  • The Monarchs have booted eight field goals, tied with Lycoming for the most in the MAC this year. All eight have come off the foot of freshman Jack Barreras, who has connected on his last eight attempts and is two makes shy of tying the school record for makes in a season with 10.
  • The defensive unit has stepped up as of late for King's, and now sits as the third-best defensive unit in the MAC in total defense, allowing 333.2 yards per game, behind only Delaware Valley and Stevenson.
  • King's has recovered eight fumbles on defense this year, which is tops in the MAC and 21st in the nation, while sophomore Mando Sallavanti leads Division III in forced fumbles with 0.67 per game.
  • Junor tailback Jordan Downes continues to rack up yards for the Monarchs in all aspects, as he moved up to ninth on the all-purpose yards per game list in Division III, gaining 174.67 yards per game on the ground, through the air and on returns.
  • Barreras is tops in the MAC in field goal percentage at .889 and is 11th in the nation in that category. He is also 10th in makes per game with 1.33.
  • Junior Jayner Gorospe is second in the MAC and 30th in the nation in yards per reception, going for 20.30 yards per grab.
  • Sophomore Tommy Klock has established himself as a top quarterback in the league, as he is second in the MAC in passing efficiency with a 153.1 mark.
  • Third downs have been a strength for King's this season, as it has chalked up the MAC's third best conversion rate on offense at 44.8. On the other side of the ball, King's has the second-best third down defense allowing teams to pick up third downs 31.6 percent of the time.
  • King's rushing attack is second in the MAC averaging 188 yards per game, as Downes is second in the conference with 87.0 yards per game this season.
  • Sophomore Charles McCall is fourth in the MAC in tackles per game with 9.2, posting four sacks as well this season.
  • Senior Devrin Baynard is eighth in the MAC in tackles for loss with seven this season, while Sallavanti and Myles Shelton are tied for ninth with 6.5.
  • King's is third in the MAC in total sacks with 21 this season, led by the five from Baynard.
  • The linebacker tandem of Sallavanti and McCall has proven to be the best in the MAC this season, as the two have posted 106 combined tackles. It's the most of any duo in the MAC this year.
  • The Monachs are getting more disciplined on the field, as they have decreased the amount of penalties and yardage each of the last three weeks.
 
Last Time Out For Albright: The Albright football team was dealt a heartbreaking 47-43 loss to Wilkes on October 6 in MAC play following a go-ahead touchdown from the Colonels with 11 seconds left.
 
Junior quarterback Jimmy Lahay registered his second-straight 300-yard game after finishing with 385 yards on going 29-of-42. Lahay also threw five touchdown passes which was the most in a game since Mike Knight had five against Norwich in the 2015 NCAA Division III tournament first round game.

Freshman running back Tony Thorpe led the Lions rushers with 37 yards and one touchdown, and two Lions receivers topped 100 yards for the second-straight game. Junior Zack Miller led the Lions with a career-high 150 yards on 11 catches and senior Kyle Dickerson posted his third-straight 100-yard receiving game with 104 yards plus two touchdowns.

Sophomore Nate Steffen and freshman Jaylan Lawson each led the Lions with 10 tackles with Steffen picking up 0.5 TFL and 0.5 sack. Foster finished with seven tackles (three solo) and a game-high 3.5 TFL along with a forced fumble. Jefferson finished with five tackles (four solo) and two interceptions in the loss. The Colonels out-gained the Lions 509-417 and Wilkes quarterback Jose Tabora totaled 479 total offensive yards, while finishing with 368 yards passing and six touchdown passes.

The Book on the Lions (0-6, 0-4 MAC):
  • Albright has a rich football past as the program was started in 1892 and has earned five NCAA appearances and 11 MAC titles with the latest coming in 2015. Albright was 8-3 last season and 7-2 in the MAC.
  • The Lions have rushed for just 36.5 yards per game this season, lowest in the MAC and second-lowest figure in Division III. Albright's passing game though has been stellar, throwing for 230 yards per game.
  • Quarterback Jimmy Lahay has thrown for 218 yards per game while his 110 completions on the year are the third-most in the MAC. His nine interceptions ties for the most in the MAC.
  • Albright has played three quarterbacks this season, as Todd Shelley and Kai Vargas have also each played in all six games.
  • The receiving corps of Kyle Dickerson, Kevin Zehner and Zack Miller is among the best in the MAC, as the three all are in the top 15 in receiving yards per game. Dickerson is third in the league with 88 yards a game through the air while scoring eight times.
  • Tony Thorpe leads the Lions in total ground yards with 183 this season, scoring a pair of touchdowns.
  • Albright is picking up 26.7 percent of its third downs this year, which is 10th in the MAC.
  • Punter Kevin Goetz is among the best in the country, as he averages 40.6 net yards per punt, 16th in the country and second-most in the MAC behind just Michael Razcak of Widener.
  • Zack Marini leads the team and is fifth in the MAC in tackles for loss, averaging 1.1 per game.
  • Head coach John Marzka is in his 11th season with Albright, posting an 85-44 record as the top boss of the Lions.
Against Albright All-Time: King's is 5-17-1 all-time against the Lions of Albright College, dropping the last 11 meetings with Albright. The Monarchs last win against Albright came in 2006, a 38-14 win for the Monarchs. Last season, Albright escaped McCarthy Stadium with a 34-31 win. King's last win in Reading was November 9, 2002, as the Monarchs won 35-7.
