WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (October 20, 2018) – After two days of play and a pair that fought for their shot at the title,
Emily Fernandez is the last Monarch standing in Middle Atlantic Conference Women's Individual Championship.
Singles Brackets
Fernandez who earned a bye in the first round, defeated Amber Achenbach of DeSales 6-0 in two straight sets today in the quarterfinals. She will now face Nicole DelRosso of FDU-Florham in the semifinals for a second chance at the title for the No. 1 flight.
In the No. 4 singles bracket,
Alyssa Santarelli fought a hard battle against Erika Slowicki of Misericordia ultimately dropping in 4-6, 6-0 and an extra set of 10-8.
Diana Rodriguez also made it to the quarterfinals facing Alvernia's Cassandra Bean before falling 6-4 and 6-3 in the No.5 flight.
Thea Seasock had a bye for the first round of No.7 singles, playing Sarah Velasquez-Rosario from Arcadia in a match that would remove her from the tournament in sets of 6-4 and 6-1.
Natalie Coffee,
Martina Gale and
Alexis Zalutko were knocked out of the competition in the first round.
Doubles Brackets
It was the dynamic duo of Coffee and Fernandez that made their way to the semifinals of doubles-competition today. Taking down DeSales and Manhattanville, the couple lost to the defending champs Wilkes University. Vasarkovy and Saliyev would become the 2018 MAC Doubles Champions.
Gale/Santarelli and Zalutko/Rodriguez did not make it past the first round.
Tomorrow the MAC Championships resume at 10:00 a.m. where semifinals and finals of the singles brackets will be completed. Due to weather competition will take place at Wyoming Valley Indoor Tennis Club.
