WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 20, 2018) – In the final day of the 2018 Middle Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Championships, sophomore
Emily Fernandez came back with a purpose after falling in last year's finals to become the 2018 MAC Women's Tennis Individual Champion in the No. 1 Singles Bracket.
Fernandez lost in sets 6-0 and 6-1 to Wilkes University's Jordan Vasarkovsky in the final matches and took home second place in 2017. This year, she defeated Wilkes Dana Saliyev 6-2 in both sets.
It was a hard three days physically and mentally for Fernandez as weather forced competition to be played between the outdoor courts at Kirby Park and indoors at Wyoming Valley Indoor Facility.
After her strong finish in last year's finals, the sophomore earned a bye for the first round of competition making her first match of the tournament against Amber Achenbach of DeSales in the quarterfinals.
Today in the second day of competition, Fernandez took her 6-0, 6-0 win straight to the semifinals where she overcame Nicole DelRosso of FDU-Florham. This match proved to be a tussle with scores of 6-0, 6-0 in Fernandez's favor sending her to the finals.
"I lost last year so it was pretty cool to come back," Said Fernandez. "The changes of the competition switched up my game but ultimately indoors is a faster-paced court and I think I played better."
