Monarch Women’s Ice Hockey Game Notes – Utica

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 31, 2018) – The King's College women's ice hockey team will open United Collegiate Hockey Conference play this weekend with a two-game series at home against Utica College. The team will start the series on Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. in Pittston at Revolution Ice Centre. They will then play on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. back at Revolution.

Last Time Out: The Monarchs were unable to ride the momentum of the program's first win in the season opener with a 10-1 loss to a very good SUNY Oswego program on Saturday night in Pittston. Mary Deyell scored King's goal on the power play in the first period off an assist by Kellie Munro. Emma Zeveney was one save shy of her career high with 57.
 
Utica opened the season with a pair of victories in New England. The Pioneers took down Becker 4-2 on Saturday before defeating New England College 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. Georgiana Santullo had two goals and an assist against the Pilgrims while Caley Susitti and Rebecca Dohner had a goal and an assist each. Bria Reilly made 17 saves on 18 shots.
 
The Book On The Monarchs (1-1-0, 0-0-0 UCHC, 0-0-0 MAC):
  • The Monarchs have struggled with committing penalties this year but have been excellent on the penalty kill. King's is tied for second in the nation with 16.0 penalty minutes per game and have successfully killed 14 of 15 power play opportunities.
  • KC is tied for ninth in the nation in combined special teams with a 66.7 percentage.
  • Four different sophomores recorded two points in the first weekend. Kellie Munro and Raeann Clancey had one goal and one assist each while Josée Aitken and Gracen Mahoney both recorded two assists.
  • Clancey scored the game-winning goal and added an assist on the insurance goal in King's 3-1 victory over Wilkes to earn Middle Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
  • Freshman Maggie Gould scored the first goal of the season during the first period of King's season-opening win. Her goal and Mary Deyell's goal against the Lakers were on the power play.
  • Kiva Sierra Stoltz recorded the program's first win in goal against the Colonels. Her 1.00 goals against average is tied for 16th in the nation while her .962 save percentage is tied for 17th.
  • Mahoney has been great on faceoffs this season winning 68.0%. She is 34-16 on faceoffs. Sophomore Morgan Almon leads the team in blocked shots with nine while classmate Kelly Tuffy has six.
The Book On The Pioneers (2-0-0, 0-0-0 UCHC):
  • Utica went 9-5-2 last year in the UCHC losing to eventual conference Champion and National runner-up Elmira 7-1 in the semifinals of the UCHC Tournament.
  • The Pioneers ended the regular season with two shutouts of the Monarchs in Utica. UC won by scores on 8-0 and 6-0 in the weekend series.
  • Sophomore Lexi Stanisewski and freshman Georgiana Santullo are 11th in the nation with four points. Santullo has two goals and two assists while Stanisewski recorded one goal and three assists on the opening weekend.
  • Junior Rebecca Brown leads the team with three goals and is tied for fifth in the nation with 1.50 goals per game.
  • Junior Bria Reilly has a .944 save percentage stopping 17 of 18 shots against NEC. Sophomore Ryann Stripp saved 17 of 19 shots for a .895 save percentage against Becker.
  • The Pioneers are tied for sixth in the nation with 5.00 goals per game and are tied for 12th in scoring defense with 1.50 goals allowed per game. Their scoring margin of 3.50 is tied for fifth.
  • Similar to the Monarchs, UC has struggled with penalties this year. They are sixth in the nation with 14.5 minutes per game. They have killed off 11 of 12 power plays opportunities.
  • UC is eighth in the nation in combined special teams with a 68.4 percentage.
Up Next: King's will be on the road for the first time this season next weekend traveling up to Rochester, NY for another UCHC series against first-year program Nazareth College. The first puck drop of the series will be on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. with the series concluding on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
