Monarch Men’s Ice Hockey Game Notes – Wilkes, Bryn Athyn

WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 14, 2018) – The King's College men's ice hockey team will be back at Revolution this weekend for a pair of games against Wilkes University and Bryn Athyn. The Monarchs will host the Colonels for the first time on Friday night before welcoming the Lions to Pittston on Saturday.

Last Time Out: King's dropped two tough conference games to Chatham and Stevenson last weekend. The Cougars rallied from a 5-1 deficit to defeat the Monarchs 6-5 in overtime on Friday night. Stevenson won 5-1 on Saturday scoring three goals in the final 26 minutes to pull away for the victory. 
 
Wilkes doubled up Stevenson and Chatham last weekend in their first two games at the Toyota Sportsplex. The Colonels defeated the Mustangs 4-2 and then scored a school record eight goals in a 8-4 win over the Cougars.
 
Bryn Athyn went 0-2 in New York last weekend dropping a 5-1 decision at SUNY Fredonia and then picked up their second 4-2 loss of the season to Nazareth.
 
The Book On The Monarchs (0-6-0, 0-4-0 UCHC, 0-2-0 MAC):
  • Five of King's 11 goals this year have come on the power play. The Monarchs were very good with the extra man advantage against Chatham scoring three times on six power play opportunities.
  • Christian La Croix leads the team in goals scored with three. He has also added one assist for four points. The sophomore transfer has done most of his damage this year on the power play recording two goals and one assist with 13 shots when King's has the man advantage.
  • Sophomore Luciano Bucci has been excellent on the ice the past four games recording a team-leading six points on two goals and four assists. He scored in both games last weekend. Bucci has also been great on faceoffs going 57-42 for a .576 percentage.
  • Tyler O'Mara has been the best on faceoffs this year for the Monarchs recording a .581 percentage by winning 43 and losing just 31. The sophomore has also added a goal and an assist both on the power play.
  • Isaac Cirinna and Nicholas Palumbo have scored a goal each for King's. Cirinna has four points with three assists on the season while Palumbo has recorded two assists for three points.
  • Jamie Lukas has scored twice this season while freshman Michael DiSchiavi recorded two assists against the Cougars last Friday.
  • Freshman Brandon Daigle nearly pulled out a victory in his first career start last weekend making 54 saves in the overtime loss to Chatham. Four of the six goals he allowed were on the power play. He has a 5.25 GAA in two appearances with a save percentage of .891.
  • Jake Tugnutt has a 4.67 GAA in three games this year and a save percentage of .900. The senior has made 39, 49, and 38 saves in each game he has played and half of the 14 goals he allowed were power play goals.
The Book On The Colonels (3-2-0, 2-1-0 UCHC, 1-0-0 MAC):
  • Wilkes has three wins in their first five games during their inaugural season including a sweep of Stevenson and Chatham last weekend.
  • Donald Flynn leads Division III with 2.60 points per game. He has recorded 13 points on five goals and eight assists. The forward was named the UCHC Co-Rookie of the Week with teammate Nick Fea. Flynn has now earned the conference weekly award twice this year.
  • Fea was also named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week after a dominating performance against the Cougars where he scored or assisted on seven of the eight goals. He finished the night with three goals and four assists. He is tied for third in the nation with 2.20 points per game recording four goals and seven assists.
  • Tyson Araujo is third on the team with nine points on three goals and six assists. Tyler Barrow adds seven points on four goals and three assists. Three of his goals were power play goals which ties him for third in the nation at 0.60 PPG per game.
  • Wade Novak has scored two short-handed goals which is the most in the nation and has recorded two assists for four points.
  • Brandon Gordon is 2-2-0 in goal with a 4.26 GAA and a .857 save percentage. Liam Murray saw his first action of the year against the Cougars last Saturday and made 32 saves while facing 36 shots for a .889 save percentage.
  • Wilkes is tied for fourth in the nation with 5.00 goals per game while allowing 4.40 goals which is the eighth most per game.
  • The Colonels are third in penalty minutes per game with 24.0 and have allowed nine power play goals on 37 opportunities.
The Book On The Lions (1-5-0):
  • Bryn Athyn is on a three-game losing skid after picking up their first win of the season 3-2 in overtime over Southern New Hampshire on the second weekend.
  • The Monarchs and Lions played two tight contests last year with BAC coming out on top in both. Bryn Athyn won 4-2 in Pittston a year ago this weekend before winning 6-3 on home ice in February.
  • BAC is in their second year of varsity ice hockey after many successful seasons as a club team. The Lions were 9-12-1 last year.
  • The Lions haven't seen a lot of goals at either end of the ice this season scoring 2.00 goals per game and allowing 4.00.
  • Defender Devon Becker leads the team with five points on two goals and three assists. The freshman scored a game-winning goal and is ranked in the top 35 in points per game by a defender and points per game by a freshman. Becker has recorded a point in all but one game this season.
  • Vojtech Luza is second on the team with four points on four goals and four assists. The junior scored both of his goals in the victory over SNH and assisted on both goals in the first loss against Nazareth.
  • Freshman Tanner Schroeder is the third BAC student-athlete with two goals on the season. Zach Pamaylaon adds two assists.
  • McKenzie Chalmers has seen 98.1 percent of the time in goal this season for the Lions recording a 3.87 GAA and a .889 save percentage while making 185 saves in 356:54 minutes of work.
  • The Lions are one of the most disciplined teams in the nation recording just 10.7 penalty minutes per game. That is the 12th best among Division III teams this year.
Up Next: King's will be in action over the Thanksgiving weekend with a pair of games at the WSYB/Catamount Radio Invitational in Rutland, Vermont. The Monarchs will take on the host Castleton University Spartans on Friday evening at 7 p.m. at Spartan Arena. King's will then either get another shot at Brockport on Saturday or will face first-year program Anna Maria depending on the results of Friday's games.
