Monarch Women’s Ice Hockey Game Notes – Manhattanville

WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 14, 2018) – The King's College women's ice hockey team will open Middle Atlantic Conference play this weekend when they travel to Manhattanville College for a pair of conference games. The Monarchs and Valiants will start the weekend off on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Rye, NY before finishing the series on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Playland Ice Casino.

Last Time Out: King's lost their first two road games of the year at high-scoring Nazareth College. The hosts won by scores of 14-0 and 9-2. Maggie Gould scored her second goal of the year on a breakaway pass from Kellie Munro and then Gracen Mahoney added a excellent unassisted goal off her own rebound while being pulled down on the ice.
 
The Valiants began their season with a victory and a tie against fellow MAC opponent Stevenson University. Manhattanille won the opener 6-2 and then finished in a 3-3 tie down at Stevenson.
 
The Book On The Monarchs (1-5-0, 0-4-0 UCHC, 0-0-0 MAC):
  • King's has struggled with penalties this season but have been excellent on the penalty kill. The Monarchs are tied for sixth in the nation with 12.7 penalty minutes per game recording 76 minutes on 38 penalties in six game.
  • KC is 29th in the nation on the penalty kill with an 86.5 percentage with 32 of 37 successful kills.
  • Their combined specials teams percentage of 53.1 is ranked 23rd in Division III.
  • Kellie Munro and Gracen Mahoney have each recorded three points on one goal and two assists to lead the team.
  • Mahoney has been the best on faceoffs for the Monarchs this year going 84-66 for a .560 percentage.
  • Freshman Maggie Gould leads the team with two goals. She scored King's first goal of the season in the victory over Wilkes and then scored on Saturday at Nazareth.
  • Raeann Clancey scored the game-winning goal and added an assist on the insurance goal in King's 3-1 victory over Wilkes to earn Middle Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
  • In net Kiva Sierra Stoltz is 1-3-0 with a 5.28 goals against average and a .873 save percentage. She is coming off a 47 save performance against the Golden Flyers.
  • Emma Zeveney has seen action in three games recording a 9.30 GAA and a .833 save percentage. She made a season-high 57 saves against Oswego, one shy of her career high.
The Book On The Valiants (1-0-1, 1-0-1 UCHC, 1-0-1 MAC):
  • Manhattanville began their season with a win and a tie against the program that ended their season a year ago in Stevenson. The Valiants finished the 2017-18 campaign with a tie and a loss to the Mustangs to give SU the MAC Championship before dropping a tight 4-3 decision at Stevenson in the UCHC Tournament.
  • MC outscored the Mustangs 9-5 last weekend down in Maryland and will be playing their first home games of the year against the Monarchs.
  • The Valiants defeated King's 12-2 and 8-2 last year in Pittston. King's is making their first trip to Playland Ice Casino.
  • The schedule allows for a MAC Champion to be crowned in the fall semester this year. MC and SU have already played, KC and MC play this weekend, while MC plays LVC and KC plays SU the weekend of November 30. Victories by the Valiants in their next four conference games would give them the MAC Championship in their final year as a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference.
  • Defender Zoey Pellowitz had one goal and six assists last weekend to lead the nation with 3.50 points per game. Her one goal was scored short-handed. Janet Xu added one goal and five assists to sit second with 3.00 points per game.
  • Amanda Sabia scored three times and added two assists for five points. She is tied for second in the nation with 1.50 goals per game and tied for fifth with 2.50 points per game. Two of Sabia's goals have been on the power play which ties her for the 10th most in Division III.
  • Tianna Lopes is tied for 12th in the nation with 2.00 points per game on one goal and three assists. She is also tied for fourth with 1.50 assists per game.
  • Rose Pjaca is 1-0-1 in goal with a 2.41 GAA and a .906 save percentage after making 48 saves against the Mustangs.
  • Manhattanville is tied for ninth with 4.50 goals per game and are tied for 13th with a scoring margin of 2.00.
  • They are second in the nation with 16.0 penalty minutes per game but have successfully killed 12 of 14 power play opportunities. On the flip side, the Valiants have scored four goals on seven power play opportunities which ranks them the best in the nation at 57.1 percent and also tops in combined special teams at 76.2 percent.
Up Next: King's will continue their longest road swing of the year with two non-conference games over Thanksgiving weekend against Nichols College. Game one will get underway at 6:40 p.m. on Friday the 23rd at Levy Rink in Harrisville, Rhode Island. The second game will have a start time of 3:40 p.m. on Saturday.
