KING'S SOFTBALL SALVAGES SPLIT WITH MISERICORDIA
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College and Misericordia University softball teams split a doubleheader Thursday at the Betzler Athletic Complex.
Misericordia won the first game 10-0 in five innings before King's took the nightcap 4-2. After the split, King's stands at 12-6 overall and 1-3 in MAC Freedom Conference play. The Cougars are now 7-9 and 2-2 in league games.
In the opener, the Cougars took a 2-0 first inning lead but then put the game away in the fourth inning with an eight-run outburst.
Kiersten Pflueger led the Cougars by going 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Jessie McDonough was 2-for-4 with three RBI while Jessica Pluta and Kayla Stephani both had two hits and scored twice. Brooke Moyle was the winning pitcher, yielding five hots with one strikeout.
Amber Saylor led King's with two hits while Samantha Bloom (5-3) was the losing pitcher.
In the nightcap, King's broke open a scoreless tie when Lexi Wolk delivered a RBI single in the third inning. King's added three runs in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. Bloom had a sacrifice fly while Kelcie Senchak added a RBI single after Megan Beaupre doubled.
The Cougars used a two-run home run by Maddie Stebich in the sixth to cut the score to 4-2 but King's held on for the win.
Megan Beaupre led King's by going 2-for-3 with a double while Ally DeVoir was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Kristina Kocher (3-1) was the winning pitcher for King's, allowing six hits with six strikeouts in the game.
Amanda Butera was 3-for-4 for the Cougars. Ashlee Brosky was the losing pitcher for Misericordia.
King's returns to action Monday with a 3:00 PM home doubleheader against the University of Scranton. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Scranton but the site was moved due to field issues.
