KING'S SOFTBALL HANDS LISA GIGLIELLO HER 600TH CAREER WIN WITH TWO VICTORIES IN MYRTLE BEACH
MYRTLE BEACH, SC --The King's College softball team handed head coach Lisa Gigliello her 600th career victory Monday at the Faspitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Gigliello reached the milestone in King's second win of the day, a 2-1 victory over Mt. Aloysius College. Earlier morning, King's picked up Gigliello's 599th victory with a 10-2 decision over Regis College.
Against Mt. Aloysius, King's trailed 1-0 in the fourth inning where the Monarchs began to rally in the bottom of the frame.
Kelcie Senchak led off with a single and moved to second-base on an error. Mackenzie Yori then delivered a RBI single to drive in Senchak with the tying run.
In the bottom of the fifth, King's Amber Saylor drew a one-out walk and stole second base. Saylor then moved to third base when Samantha Bloom struck out but reached first-base on a wild pitch, giving the Monarchs runners at first and third. Lexi Wolk then drove in Saylor with the go-ahead run.
In the seventh inning Mt. Aloysius looked to rally, loading the bases with nobody out. But Gigliello brought Kristina Kocher into the game in relief and the Monarch sophomore promptly retired three straight batters without the ball leaving the infield, including a game-ending strikeout to preserve the 25-year veteran coach's milestone victory. Gigliello is now 600-304-2 in her King's career.
King's mustered only four hits in the game while limiting the Lions to six. Yori was 2-for-3 with a RBI while Samantha Bloom and Senchak had the other hits for King's. Nicole Kirse was the winning pitcher for King's, allowing one run on six hits while Kocher picked up the save.
In the Monarchs first game of the day against Regis, King's built a 4-1 lead after three innings, but then put the game away with a six-run sixth to invoke the eight-run rule.
Bloom was 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBI while Saylor went 3-for-4 with three runs and a double. Gabby Leary finished 2-for-4 with a two-run double while Wolk was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Gabriella Medina contributed by going 2-for-4 with a RBI triple. Bloom was the winning pitcher, scattering eight hits while striking out four batters in the game and allowing one earned run.
King's resumes play in Myrtle Beach Tuesday with a 1:30 PM game against Penn College of Technology. The Monarchs then met Chatham University at 3:30 PM.
