WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team won the first game of its doubleheader against FDU-Florham 8-0 in five innings. But the Devils responded by taking the nightcap 3-1 to forge a doubleheader split Saturday in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
With the split King's stands at 15-12 overall and 4-6 in MAC Freedom Conference play while the Devils are 13-13 and 6-4.
In the opener King's held a 3-0 lead but blew the game open with five runs in the fourth inning to invoke the eight-run rule an inning later.
Brittany McNair was 2-for-2 with a RBI double and RBI single. Amber Saylor and Ally DeVoir both went 1-for-2 and scored twice. Samantha Bloom was 1-for-3 with a RBI. Bloom was also the winning pitcher, tossing a five-inning one-hitter with two strikeouts.
In the second game FDU scored twice in the second inning and added another in the fourth to build a 3-0 lead. King's countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1 but the Monarchs were unable to find home plate the rest of the game.
King's had runners thrown out at home twice in the game and left nine runners on base.
Lexi Wolk was 3-for 4 in the game while Megan Beaupre, Taylor Norris, and Gabby Leary had two hits apiece. Kristina Kocher was the losing pitcher, allowing two runs in one and one-third innings. Nicole Kirse finished the game, allowing one run in five and two-thirds innings of relief.
