KING'S SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR OF ONE-RUN GAMES TO SCRANTON
SCRANTON -- The King's College softball team came up just short on both ends of a road doubleheader at the University of Scranton on Monday. The Monarchs dropped the opener 5-4 before falling in the nightcap 6-5 in nine innings.
With the losses, King's slips to 18-16 while Scranton improved to 26-6.
In the opener, King's scored three runs in the third and one in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. But the Royals countered with three runs in the bottom of the third, aided in part by a King's error.
Mackenzie Yori led King's with a 3-for-4 showing with a double and scored two runs. Samantha Bloom was 2-for-4 with a two-run double while Kelcie Senchak was 1-for-4 with a run-scoring triple. Bloom was the losing pitcher, allowing five runs, four which were earned, while striking out three batters.
In the nightcap King's trailed 3-1 but tied the game with a pair of runs in the sixth inning when Ally DeVoir singled and Bloom drilled a two-run home run two batters later.
After a scoreless seventh the teams entered international tiebreaking rules in the eighth inning
Brittany McNair was placed at second base and scored on a RBI triple from Amber Saylor to put the Monarchs ahead 4-3.
After Scranton tied the score in the bottom of the eighth on an unearned run, King's responded with McNair scoring on an unearned run as the Monarchs took a 5-4 lead.
But in the bottom of the ninth, Scranton capitalized on a pair of King's defensive errors to score a pair of unearned runs to walk away with a 6-5 victory.
Bloom was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI while Saylor and Lexi Wolk both added RBI hits. McNair also scored twice for King's. Nicole Kirse was the hard-luck loser for the Monarchs allowing three earned runs and just five hits in the game.
King's returns to the field Tuesday with a 3:15 PM doubleheader at Lebanon Valley College.
