Monarch Field Hockey Game Notes – Misericordia, Marywood

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 26, 2018) – The King's College field hockey team returns to the first for the first time in six days on Saturday, jumping back into Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action Saturday to battle defending league champ Misericordia University before hosting Marywood University Sunday for Senior Day. King's is definitely enjoying the time off, having played a stretch of four games in seven days last week.

The Monarchs will honor nine players Sunday for Senior Day, saying thank you to seniors Kelsey Gabriele, Natalie Muscatell, Taylor Runo, Katy Higinbothom, Rachel Zultevicz, Connie Mangino, Kelley O'Keefe along with junior physician assistant majors Xzyla Russell and Maryrose Mauro.

Last Time Out: The Monarchs are coming off a 3-0 defeat at home Sunday afternoon to St. Thomas Aquinas College, as the Spartans scored three first-half tallies for the win. It was the first home loss of the season for the Monarchs, who are now 3-1 on the season on Betzler Field. Before that, King's went on the road and knocked off Delaware Valley University 3-0 behind a goal and two assists from Jolee Treslar.

The Book On The Monarchs (5-5, 1-0 MAC Freedom):
  • King's ranks in the middle of the conference in most offensive categories so far this year, scoring 1.20 goals per game, sixth-best in the MAC Freedom.
  • The Monarchs are surrendering 1.88 a contest, which is fourth-best in the league.
  • When King's has won, it normally has been in shutout fashion, as the Monarchs have won four of their five games with clean sheets.
  • Sophomore Brianne Maluda has helped King's rank first in the conference in shutouts per game with 0.40 this season, 29th nationally.
  • Treslar comes into the weekend ranked No. 4 in the MAC Freedom in assists per game with 0.40.
  • Senior Kelsey Gabriele has posted 86 points in her career at King's, scoring 35 goals and assisting on 16 others.
  • Gabriele's point total is ninth all-time at King's, as she tries to become the seventh player ever to get to 100 points. She would be the first since Alyssa Monaghan in 2015.
  • Gabriele is currently fourth in the MAC Freedom in goals per game with five.
  • King's save percentage of .743 is fourth-best in the conference thus far this year.
The Book On The Cougars (1-7, 1-0 MAC Freedom):
  • Misericordia, the 2017 MAC Freedom champs, has struggled out of the gate but mostly due to a brutally difficult schedule. The Cougars have the nation's 35th hardest slate thus far and the hardest schedule in the league.
  • MU's offensive unit has been slow to get going this year, having netted just five scores through eight games.
  • The defense and goalkeeping have been strong, as Misericordia is first in the league in saves per game with 9.50 per game.
  • Keeper Katelyn Campbell is second in the MAC Freedom in save percentage with a .809 rate, while ranking 12th nationally and second in the league in saves per game.
  • Misericordia is coming off a win though, moving to 1-0 in the MAC Freedom with a 2-0 win against Manhattanville.
  • Madison Granoski and Kailey Vogl each scored in that game for the Cougars, who posted a 15-4 penalty corner total in that contest.
  • Misericorida is 14-12 all-time against King's, as the teams have split the last eight meetings. King's is 7-6 at home in the series.
The Book On The Pacers (5-3, 0-0 Atlantic East):
  • Marywood is 5-3 on the young season, having now jumped into conference action as of yet.
  • The Pacers are coming off a 1-0 loss at Stockton University last Saturday, taking on Delaware Valley University Wednesday afternoon.
  • After Sunday's match-up with King's, Marywood will play five straight league games.
  • Marywood's offense has been clicking this year, scoring 3.63 goals per game, which is first in the AEC and 21st nationally.
  • The Pacers like to high press and force teams back into their own zone, collecting 9.38 penalty corners per game, 1st in the AEC.
  • Jenny Dickey is second in the Atlantic East in goals per game with 0.88, having tallied seven times this year.
  • Keeper Kerri Mountz is third in the conference with a .745 save percentage, while defensive teammates Marisa Mongioi and Michaela Schmidt are the team leaders in defensive saves with two apiece.
  • The Monarchs are 18-4-1 against Marywood all-time, and have won every meeting with the Pacers dating back to 1998.
