Forgash Lowers 800 Record At Great Dane Classic

STATEN ISLAND, NY (January 12, 2019) – Freshman Mitchell Forgash became the first King's College runner to break the two-minute barrier in the 800 meters to lead a small group of indoor track and field student-athletes at the Great Dane Classic on Saturday held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.
 
The Monarchs faced mainly Division I competition at the non-scoring meet.
 
On the Track
800 Meter Run 
Mitchell Forgash won his heat while bettering his own school record of 2:00.61 by breaking the two-minute barrier with a time of 1:59.24. Forgash finished 10th overall out of 20 runners and was the second Division III finisher of three total. Forgash was the second fastest freshman at the meet.
 
George Mason senior Blaine Lacey outkicked Howard senior Tariq Fullerton in the top heat with a time of 1:53.74. Fullerton was three seconds back in 1:56.52.
 
Field Events 
Shot Put 
King-Shakim Rose had an impressive collegiate debut as the freshman qualified for the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships with a mark of 13.22 meters (43'4.50") on his first throw. Rose fouled on his other two throws attempts. He finished 14th overall in the event out of 27 throwers and was second in the first of two flights. He was the only Division III thrower in the field.
 
Nick Vena had the best throw of the day with a mark of 18.68 meters (61'3.5") on his first attempt. George Mason sophomore Jaylen Simmons finished second and was the top collegiate with a mark of 16.45 meters (53'11.75") on his third throw. Albany sophomore Dominic Reed was the only thrower better than Rose in the first flight with a mark of 13.44 meters (44'1.25").

Weight Throw 
Jackie Ni had a career best throw of 15.13 meters (49'7.75") on his first throw to finish 12th overall out of 25 throwers. Ni fouled on his other two attempts. He was second in the first of two flights. Justin Le Cadre had a mark of 12.32 meters (40'5") on his first throw to finish 20th overall and eighth in the same flight as Ni. Le Cadre fouled on his other two throws.
 
UMBC sophomore won the meet with a throw of 18.97 meters (62'3") on his fourth throw after qualifying for finals with a mark of 17.79 meters on his second attempt. David Carlson, a senior at Albany was second with a mark of 18.74 meters (61'5.75") on his fourth throw. He fouled on four of his six throws but was able to qualify for the finals with a mark of 18.50 meters on his first toss of the day. George Mason junior Sidney Yap topped the first flight with a mark of 15.15 meters (49' 8.5")
 
The men's track and field team will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Susquehanna University to compete in the Maroon & Orange Classic.
