Monarch Women’s Ice Hockey Game Notes – William Smith

WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 9, 2019) – The King's College women's ice hockey team will begin the second half of the season this weekend when the travel to upstate New York to take on the William Smith College Herons in a pair of United Hockey Collegiate Conference (UCHC) games.

Last Time Out: The Monarchs ended the first semester with a 7-0 loss at SUNY Cortland. Emma Zeveney made 29 saves in between the pipe before being relived by Kiva Sierra Stoltz who made 18 in 24 minutes of action.
 
The Herons dropped a tough 3-2 overtime decision to SUNY Cortland on Sunday afternoon. Julia Mings and Stephanie Hampton tallied first period goals before the Red Dragons rallied in the third with two goals by Grace Schnorr to send the game into overtime.  
 
The Book On The Monarchs (1-12-0, 0-8-0 UCHC, 0-4-0 MAC):
  • Sophomore captain Gracen Mahoney led the team in scoring and in the faceoff circle during the first semester. The forward recorded five points on three goals and two assists while winning 171 faceoff attempts.
  • Kellie Munro has also recorded five points this year for the Monarchs. The sophomore has two goals and a team-leading three assists.
  • Sophomore Raeann Clancey scored the game-winning goal against Wilkes in the season-opener and had added two assists for three points.
  • Freshmen Meghan Mietlicki and Erin King have been very consistent on defense for the Monarchs this season. The duo has played in every game and have blocked a combined 47 shots.
  • Kiva Sierra Stoltz saw most of the action in net making eight starts in 10 games. She recorded a 6.27 GAA, a .868 save percentage, and saved a total of 289 shots.
  • Emma Zeveney has started five of the seven games she has seen action in and has a 6.73 GAA and a .869 save percentage.
  • The Monarchs will look to be better in not committing penalties during the second semester. King's enters the second half of the season ranked third in the nation with 11.8 penalty minutes per game recording a total of 154 penalty minutes in 13 games.
  • After starting the season strong on the penalty kill, the Monarchs have struggled the past last six games of the first half allowing 12 power play goals. KC allowed just five power play goals in their first seven games of the season.
  • King's combined special teams percentage of 50.4 percent is ranked 34th in Division III. The Monarchs have been successful on 58 of 115 total power plays.
The Book On The Herons (10-3-0, 8-0-0 UCHC):
  • William Smith is on a three-game losing streak to begin the post-holiday schedule after starting the season with 10 wins. The Herons dropped two tight games at Amherst right before the new year before their first loss in five games at The Cooler this season.
  • WSC traveled down to Pittston in early February last year and shut out the Monarchs 9-0 and 7-0 in a pair of games at the Rev.
  • Freshman forward Abbey Luth is 15th in the nation and fifth among newcomers with 18 points on 11 goals and seven assists. She has seven multi-point games this season including a hat trick against Lebanon Valley in November.
  • Gina Scibetta, Jules Kennedy, and Jordan Roetzer have also done a lot of scoring for the Herons. Scibetta has 16 points on eight goals and eight assists recording a point in nine games including three multi-point games. Kennedy and Roetzer have recorded 15 points each. Kennedy has scored a goal in eight different games and has nine goals and six assists with five multi-point games. Roetzer has recorded a team-leading 10 assists including a season-high two twice.
  • Four other Herons have recorded double-digit points. Stephanie Hampton has 14 points on six goals and eight assists, Emily Martino recorded 13 points on three goals and 10 assists, Julia Mings has 11 points on seven goals and four assists, and Kate Klimaszewski adds one goal and nine assists.
  • 19 different skaters have recorded at least one point this season for William Smith. Martino is tied for fifth in the nation in points per game by a defenseman.
  • Olivia Williams is 8-3-0 in goal with a 1.64 GAA and a .927 save percentage in 657:13 minutes of action. The sophomore has stopped 230 of the 248 shots she has faced.
  • Amanda Aalto has recorded a shutout in both games she has played this year making 27 saves in a weekend sweep of Chatham.
  • William Smith has the second-highest scoring offense in Division III scoring 4.62 goals per game. Their defense is 12th conceding just 1.46 goals per game. The Herons have a scoring margin of 3.15 which is the third best in the nation.
  • The Herons are 10th in penalty minutes with 10.6 per game but have been very successful at killing penalties. WSC is ranked fourth on the penalty kill at 95.1 percent.
Up Next: King's will face their toughest test of the year as they take on highly-ranked Elmira College for a pair of games in Pine Valley. The Soaring Eagles fell in the National Championship game a season ago and are the top-ranked team in the D3hockey.com Poll this week after an impressive sweep of Norwich and Plattsburgh at the East-West Hockey Classic.
