WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 19, 2019) -- The King's College women's swimming team showcased its talented and deep roster in Saturday's 2019-20 season opener from Scandlon Gym, as the Monarchs knocked off Marywood University 201-59.
The Monarchs started things out with a bang, posting the three-fastest times in the 200 yard medley relay, as the quartet of
Liz Savidge,
Rachel Woomer,
Kaelyn Gardner and
Alexis Majka finished with a 1:53.94, followed by a 2:02.99 by the King's "B" relay of
Noelle Pedersen,
Abbi Strennen,
Sarah Fleisher and
Claire Coe. On the event, King's racked up 15 points.
In the 1000 free, freshman
Sarah Fleisher earned her first victory as a Monarch, as she posted a time of 11:47.01, while
Hannah Redding was third with a 12:20.02 and
Kailie Karensky finished fourth with a 12:20.08.
The 200 freestyle event, freshman
Alexis Majka and sophomore
Claire Coe each had a strong swim, as Majka finished with a 2:04.29 to earn the nine points while Coe chalked up a 2:05.69 for second place. The next swim was a 50 breaststroke, and freshman
Amina Zaidi registered a win for the Monarchs with a 34.98, just besting teammate
Abbi Strennen with her 35.06.
The standout freshmen class continued to shine in the 100 butterfly, as Woomer posted a win with a time of 59.54. Gardner was second for the Monarchs with a 1:04.44, and
Alyssa Gesek swam a 1:10.61.
In the 50 freestyle, Majka posted the win with a 26.10, followed by another freshman in
Madison Modugno and her 27.01. Sophomore
Corinne Smith was third with a 27.63, and fellow sophomore
Stephanie Tabaka recorded a 28.39.
The 100 freestyle was next on the docket, and Coe once again touched the wall first as she edged Modugno with a 1:00.26 while Modugno swam a 1:00.91.
In the 100 backstroke, Pedersen had the best time with a 1:06.56, while Smith and freshman
Emilia Serafin were strong as well with times of 1:09.50 and 1:09.81, respectively. Kate Duffy also earned four points in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:10.11.
The only win of the day for Marywood came in the 100 breaststroke, but Zaidi and Fleisher finished second and third with times of 1:18.02 and 1:21.03. Woomer would be back in the pool for the 500 free and once again earned a decisive victory, posting a 5:34.54. Senior
Paige Molnar swam a 6:24.64 to take third as well for King's.
The Monarchs would earn another victory in the 50 butterfly, thanks to Gardner and her time of 28.23. Gesek was third after registered 31.32, and Duffy finished with a time of 32.67.
The 200 IM was all King's as well, with the top three finishers all coming from the Monarchs. Savidge would take the victory in the event after posting a 2:25.27, including finishing with a 33.65 in the final leg. Fleisher was next in for King's with her 2:29.08, while Gardner took third after touching in with a 2:32.19.
The final race of the day came in the 200 freestyle relay, as the King's "A" relay of Coe, Modugno, Majka and Woomer swam a very strong time of 1:45.67 for the win. The "B" relay of Strennen, Redding, Pedersen and Smith was second with a 1:50.49.
King's will return to action next weekend at Cabrini University at 1 p.m.
