Forgash Wins 400 Meters, Michels Sets 500 Meter Record At Cornell

ITHACA, NY (February 10, 2019) – Mitchell Forgash won the 400 meter dash and Daniel Michels was a part of two school records to headline a great day for the King's College men's indoor track and field team at Cornell's Sunday Invitational.
 
There was no team scoring at the invitational.
 
On the Track
60 Meter Dash 
Emmanuel Edoukou had the eight-fastest time in the prelims but missed out on qualifying for the finals by 0.003 seconds as the sophomore finished second in the sixth of six heats in 7.15 seconds. Matthew Nelson qualified for the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships with a time of 7.52 seconds to finish third in the fifth heat. Richard Kell was fifth in the same heat with a time of 7.67 seconds. Chibuikem Anyachebelu made his season debut and ran a time of 7.78 seconds to finish fifth in the third heat. James Powell ran in heat four and had a career best time of 8.27 seconds.
 
Brockport sophomore Olivier Kothor won the event with a time of 6.99 seconds in the finals edging Cornell junior James Norris and senior Alex Beck. Norris finished in 7.03 while Beck ran 7.04. Kothor had the second-fastest time in the prelims winning the fourth heat in 7.01 seconds. Tyler O'Bryant of Oneonta had the fastest time in prelims running 7.00 to win the first heat but did not run in the finals. Norris was second in the first heat with a time of 7.07 seconds while Beck won heat two in 7.10 seconds. Kuune Mini of Cornell won heat three in 7.05 seconds, Egypt Page of Brockport won the fifth heat in 7.29 seconds, and Bertwin Ben-Smith of the Ottawa Lions Track Club defeated Edoukou in heat six with a time of 7.09 seconds.
 
200 Meter Dash 
Emmanuel Edoukou had another great race to finish third overall out of 49 finisher and won the second of 12 heats with a time of 23.13 seconds. Richard Kell won the 10th heat with a career best time of 24.74 seconds. Chibuikem Anyachebelu was fourth in Kell's heat with a time of 26.55 seconds while James Powell was fifth in the 12th heat with a season best time of 28.61 seconds.  
 
Unattached Nathan Phillips won the first heat in 22.68 seconds edging Olivier Kothor at the line by 0.05 of a second. Devon Legrair of Brockport was second to Edoukou in the second heat with a time of 23.69 seconds. Michael Eubanks of Cortland was second to Kell in the 10th heat with a time of 25.02 seconds while Jonathan St. Hilaire of Delaware Valley won Powell's heat in 28.61 seconds.
  
400 Meter Dash
Mitchell Forgash won his third event of the year as the freshman ran 51.22 seconds to top the field of 25 finishers. Forgash won the first of six heats by 0.20 seconds edging Nick Grasso of Oneonta on the final straightaway. Forgash held a 0.10 second lead over Grasso at the halfway mark before pulling away during the final 200 meters.  
 
500 Meter Run 
Daniel Michels recorded a new school record in the event as him and Steffen Hude were the first men to run the distance in program history. Michels finished second in the second heat with a time of 1:16.53. Hude was fourth in the heat with a time of 1:19.91. Trenton Schreiber won the heat and was second overall in 1:13.64. Marcus Brown had the best time of the day while winning the first heat in 1:08.97. Oswego sophomore Matthew Barbookles finished third overall with the best collegiate time of 1:14.43.
 
800 Meter Run 
Steffen Hude led a trio of Monarchs with a career best time of 2:19.18 to finish eighth in the fourth of four heats. Kevin Wrobleski finished right behind him with a time of 2:19.74. Daniel Michels was the third Monarchs to finish in 2:19.90. All three ran pretty much next to each other the whole race. Michels paced the group for the first three laps before Hude and Wrobleski passed him on the bell lap. Ryan Behre of Cortland won the heat in 2:09.61 just ahead of Samuel Voak of Oswego in 2:09.62. Behre and Voak were pretty much side-by-side the whole race. Oneonta had the top three times in the field of 38 as junior teammates Ethan McDonald, Sean Ryan, and Isaiah Ruiz went 1-2-3 in the first heat. McDonald was the only one to crack two minutes in 1:58.41 while Ryan and Ruiz ran 2:00.41 and 2:01.14.

1 Mile Run 
Matt Schoch ran a career best time of 5:11.92 to finish ninth in the fourth of four heats. His heat was won by Colin Kane in 4:31.01. Cornell had the best two times at the meet as junior Tyler Fisher ran 4:19.72 and sophomore ran 4:21.98 in the first heat. Sean Kuehn of Brockport was the best Division III finisher in third overall out of 48 runners with a time of 4:23.14. 
  
4x400 Meter Relay 
King's team of Mitchell Forgash, Daniel Michels, Steffen Hude, and Kevin Wrobleski broke the school record and finished seventh of nine teams with a time of 3:48.33. The squad just beat the previous record of 3:48.89 run at MACs last year. Forgash started things off with a split of 51.85 seconds before handing the baton off to Michels who split 59.85 seconds. Hude ran a 59.40 second split and Wrobleski finished things up with a split of 57.25 seconds. Cornell had the top two teams at 3:18.11 and 3:33.00. Brockport was the best Division III squad in third overall with a time of 3:33.06.
 
Field Events
Long Jump 
Matthew Nelson finished 10th of 22 jumpers with a mark of 5.97 meters (19'7") just missing the school record by 0.02 meters. The freshman started with a jump of 5.53 meters (18'1.75") on his first jump before hitting his best mark of his second jump. Nelson fouled on his third attempt. Oseoba Airewele had the best jump of the day at 6.93 meters (22'9") on his fifth jump. Egypt Page of Brockport was second and the best collegiate finisher with a mark of 6.73 meters (22'1") on his third jump.
  
Shot Put 
King-Shakim Rose hit 12.97 meters (42'6.75") on his third attempt to finish ninth of 34 throwers. The freshman fouled on his first two attempts. Justin Le Cadre threw 12.56 meters (41'2.5") on his second attempt to finish 15th. Le Cadre also fouled on his other two throws. Cornell had the top two throwers as junior Zach Hawley threw 16.85 meters (55'3.5") on his fourth attempt and freshman Dan Mead hit 16.39 meters (53'9.25") on his third throw. Tony DeYoung of Brockport was third with a mark of 15.98 meters (52'5.25") on his sixth attempt.
 
Weight Throw  
Jackie Ni finished ninth overall out of 34 throwers with a mark of 15.24 meters (50'0") on his second throw of the day. The sophomore fouled on his other five throws. Justin Le Cadre was 12th with a mark of 14.25 meters (46'9") on his second toss. The freshman hit 13.52 meters (44'4.25") and 14.10 meters (46'3.25") on his other two throws. King-Shakim Rose threw a season best 13.09 meters (42'11.5") on his first attempt of the day. He fouled on his other two throws.
 
Albert Hughes had the best mark of the day at 18.75 meters (61'6.25") on his fifth attempt. Norberto Cervantes of Oneonta was second and the top collegiate finisher with a toss of 16.91 meters (55'5.75") on his sixth attempt.
 
The Monarchs will compete in their final meet before the MAC Championships next Saturday when they travel out to Susquehanna University for a 9:30 a.m. start at the SU Invitational.
