BETHLEHEM, PA (February 22, 2019) – The King's College men's indoor track and field team isn't just on pace to break the school record for amount of points scored at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. Through five events, they have already surpassed the record. The Monarchs scored 16 points in the weight throw and
Matthew Nelson finished third in the long jump to highlight an amazing start to the conference championships.
Widener leads the field with 31 points followed closely by defending champion Stevenson with 30. Eastern has 25 points to sit third while the Monarchs are fourth with 23 points. King's previous best point total at MACs was 21 points last year. Messiah is fifth with 22 points while Lebanon Valley is sixth with 21. DeSales is seventh with 18 points, Misericordia is eighth with 17 points, Hood is ninth with five points, Alvernia is 10th with two, and Manhattanville rounds out the scoring with one point.
On the Track
60 Meter Dash
Emmanuel Edoukou cruised to victory in the first of three heats with a school record time of 7.06 seconds to qualify for Saturday's final. The sophomore led from wire-to-wire to best his previous record of 7.09 seconds from the Diplomat Open. Edoukou had the third-fastest time in the field of 23 and was the only non-Stevenson sprinter in the top five. Morgan Cheatham was second in the heat at 7.12 seconds which was fifth overall to also qualify for the final.
Dereck Davis won the third heat with a time of 6.95 (6.942) seconds for the fastest time of the day. Senior teammate Kendall Belser won the second heat with a nearly identical time of 6.95 (6.947) seconds. Stevenson has five of the eight sprinters in the final as they look to win their second consecutive conference title.
4x200 Meter Relay
The King's team of
Emmanuel Edoukou,
Matthew Nelson,
Richard Kell and
Cole Horan led for the first three legs but ultimately finished third in the second of three heats and eighth overall out of 12 teams to score one point with a school record time of 1:37.17. The Monarchs were able to take down the previous school record of 1:37.42 run at the MAC Championships last year after coming within two seconds of the record last weekend at Susquehanna. Misericordia used a strong last leg to win the heat in 1:35.43 while DeSales was second in 1:36.01.
Lebanon Valley won gold and just missed the MAC Championships record by winning the third heat in 1:31.82 while Stevenson was second in 1:32.34. Widener took home bronze with a time of 1:34.06.
Field Events
Long Jump
Matthew Nelson had a career day as the freshman surprised the field out of the first flight to finish third and earn third team All-MAC honors while scoring six points with a school record jump of 6.60 meters (21'8") on his second attempt of the day. Nelson had five jumps better than his previous record of 6.20 meters he jumped last week at Susquehanna. He started with his worst jump of the day at 6.14 meters before recording his best mark. He finished with a jump of 6.35 meters on his final jump of preliminaries before waiting for the second flight to finish to officially qualify for the finals. In the finals he hit 6.33 meters and 6.52 meters before finishing with a jump of 6.16 meters.
Cole Horan was 21st with a mark of 5.67 meters (18'7.25") on third attempt. The freshman had marks of 5.45 meters and 5.61 meters on his first two jumps.
Widener sophomore Matthew Ludlow won gold in the event with a mark of 6.82 meters (22'4.5") on his first jump of the day. Eastern sophomore Evan Wildermuth was second at 6.77 meters (22'2.5") on his first jump.
Weight Throw
The Monarchs scored 16 of their points and had two All-Conference finishers in
Jackie Ni and
Justin Le Cadre. Ni was second to score eight points and earn Second Team honors with a mark of 15.54 meters (51'0") second attempt. The sophomore fouled on his first try, recorded his second-best mark of his career on his second try, and then hit 14.86 meters on his third attempt of the preliminaries. In the finals, he recorded a mark of 15.38 meters on his fifth throw of the day and fouled on his other two attempts. Le Cadre was third to score six points and earn Third Team honors team with a season best mark of 15.15 meters (49'8.5") on his third toss. The freshman had marks of 14.34 meters and 14.49 meters before his best throw of the day. He fouled on all three of his attempts in the finals.
King-Shakim Rose was King's third thrower to earn points finishing in seventh to score two points with a season best mark of 13.98 meters (45'10.5") on his last throw of finals. Rose qualified with marks of 13.02 meters and 12.53 meters before fouling on his final attempt in the preliminaries. He hit 13.37 meter on his first attempt of the finals and fouled on his second.
DeSales junior Chris Brinkman won the gold medal with a throw of 15.81 meters (51'10.5") on his third attempt of the day. Brinkman fouled on three of his six attempts while hitting 15.56 meters and 15.78 meters on his other two good tosses.
The Monarchs will be back at Lehigh University's Rauch Fieldhouse in Bethlehem for the second day of the MAC Championships on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
