King's Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season With King's Invitational

Box Score WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 7, 2019) -- The King's College women's tennis team opened their 2019-20 season Saturday morning, hosting seven other teams for the 2019 King's Invitational, played at Kirby Park. 

The Invitational featured seven singles brackets, along with four doubles flights which were all contested on Saturday. In No. 1 singles, junior Emily Fernandez cruised in the quarterfinals 6-0, 6-0 before taking on Ashlynn Searer of Susquehanna in the semifinals. Fernandez would move in Sunday's final with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Searer. She will take on Nastashia DuNunzio of the University of Scranton in the finals. 

In the No. 2 singles bracket, Diana Rodriguez earned a win over Raechel Aviles of Cabrini 6-2, 6-0 but would drop a heartbreaker in the semifinals to Cassidy Breen of Misericordia University. Rodriguez won the first set 6-1, but fell 6-3 in the second set. In the super-tiebreaker, Breen would pull away for the 10-6 victory. 

At No. 3 singles, Alexis Zalutko cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win in the quarterfinals, but fell to Marissa Campo of Scranton in the semifinals 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Mikayla Reynolds dropped her quarterfinal opener at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-3, but Lauren Lamarca earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Lamarca battled well but fell in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. 

The Monarchs would find another one of their own in the finals on Sunday, as Addy Adkins posted a gutty 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 win in the quarterfinals over 
Lyndsey Medric of Marywood University. Atkins turned around in the No. 6 semis and powered into Sunday's finals with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Arcadia University's Tatum Marino. 

At No. 7 singles, Codi Young earned her first win as a Monarch in the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-1 win but would fall in the semifinals to Nicole Pangiochi of Miseicordia 6-3, 6-1. 

In doubles action, Fernandez and Zalutko teammed at No. 1 doubles to earn an 8-2 win in the opening round. The pair would see their tournament come to an end though, as they dropped an 8-5 decision to a team from Susquehanna. 

At No. 2 pairs, Rodriguez and Reynolds pushed past Doud and Mondavi of Marywood 8-3, before earning a spot in the No. 2 doubles finals with an 8-0 win in the semifinals. The Monarch pair will take on Kelly and Klacko from Scranton Sunday. 

In the No. 3 doubles flight, the newcomer pair of Lamarca and Atkins moved into the finals on Sunday with a pair of wins, as they knocked off the Arcadia pair 8-6 in the quarterfinals before defeating the Marywood team 8-3 in the semifinals. 

The No. 4 doubles bracket saw PJ Kaur and Young combine to reach the finals, as the team earned an 8-5 win in the quarterfinals over Misericordia. In the semifinals, Kaur and Young outlasted Bancock and Laboranti of Marywood 8-6. Kaur and Young will take on the No. 4 pair from Scranton Sunday. 

Action will resume Sunday morning from Kirby Park, with the finals in all seven singles brackets and the four doubles flights being contested.
