ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY (January 25, 2020) -- The King's College men's volleyball team remained unbeaten as they swept both Sarah Lawrence, 3-0, and the host Bard College, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in the Stevenson Athletic Center.
vs. Sarah Lawrence (3-0, 25-8, 25-10, 25-9):
The Monarchs opened the match on a 16-4 run capped by a service ace from freshman
Sam Capwell before closing out the first set on a 9-4 run as freshman
Aziz Atiyeh recorded the set-ending kill. King's continued their momentum in the second set as they began with another dominating 17-5 run that ended with another Capwell ace, and they cruised to a second-set win that ended with a kill from Capwell, 25-10. The first two sets were too daunting for the Gryphons (0-4 overall) as the Monarchs finished the match, handing Sarah Lawrence the third set loss, 25-9, with freshman
George Beck delivering the final kill.
Freshman Joe
Joe Herman led the offense with nine kills on 15 attempts, hitting .467, with three digs, while junior
Danny Harpersberger and Capwell added six kills a piece, with Harpersberger hitting .857 with three digs and two service aces and Capwell hitting .300 with five aces. Beck dished out 24 assists on the Monarch's 33 kills, and Atiyeh led King's with five digs.
Sarah Lawrence (0-4) was led by Felix Massey with five kills and five digs, while Lance Leoz led with six assists.
As a team, King's totaled 33 kills on 61 attempts, hitting .361, for the match compared to the Gryphons .000 hitting percentage. The Monarchs held the advantage in every team statistical category, including kills (33-10), aces (11-1), blocks (2-0), assists (31-9), and digs (24-16).
vs. Bard (3-0, 25-10, 25-10, 25-15):
Sophomore
Matt Piontkowski started the match with a kill to set the tone for the Monarchs as they opened the match with a 13-3 run that included a stretch where King's recorded nine unanswered points to take set one, 25-10, over the host Raptors (1-1 overall). Despite giving up the first point of the second set, Piontkowski recorded the next two kills for the Monarchs to spark the offense. Bard kept the beginning of the second set close as King's led, 10-7, before the Monarchs recorded six unanswered points behind four service aces by Herman before taking the match lead, 2-0, posting a 25-10 win in set two.
The final set of the day for the Monarchs started in a back-and-forth effort as the Raptors would not allow King's to use a big run to put the match away. King's led 17-12 before four straight Raptors errors and a final 4-3 run ended by another ace by Herman gave the Monarchs the third set, 25-15, and complete the tri-match sweep in New York.
Capwell had a standout game for the Monarchs, totaling 11 kills on 14 attempts, hitting .714, with three total blocks. Piontkowski added seven kills on 12 attempts, hitting .500. For the defense, Herman led with seven digs and senior
Kyle Duggan added six. Beck played well all around, totaling 22 assists on the team's 29 kills, and adding five digs. In addition, Herman and sophomore Joe Jones, Jr. totaled five service aces for this match.
Bard (1-1) was led by Tristan Kozul and Angel Obergh with three kills each, while Kozul led with seven assists and Obergh led with six digs.
The Monarchs hit .311 for the match, recording 29 kills on 61 attempts compared to the Raptors' -.127 hitting percentage. They also held the advantage in kills (29-12), aces (10-2), assists (25-11), and digs (27-16).
King's returns to action as they host the Mighty Macs of Immaculata University on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in McGrane Gymnasium.
