Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Moves to 2-0 With 11-7 Win Over Immaculata

WILKES-BARRE, PA (February 26, 2020) -- Freshman Nolan Reape and junior Alec Martin each finished with four points to propel the King's College men's lacrosse team to an 11-7 home victory over Immaculata University in play from McCarthy Stadium Wednesday.

The Monarchs moved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2014 season, thanks to dominant offensive play though the score could have been much more lop-sided if it wasn't for the 23 saves by Mighty Mac goalkeeper Denton States.

After King's trailed 2-1 going into the second quarter, the Monarchs scored the game's next three goals including a pair by junior Michael O'Brien to take a 4-2 edge with 7:38 to play in the opening half. The two teams would exchange goals from that point, as King's took a 5-3 lead into the halftime intermission thanks to a late score from junior Zach Anderson

After the break, King's ballooned its lead up to four at 7-3 thanks to goals from Anderson and Brandon Gambino. Immaculata (0-1) got a score from Steve Long, but junior Trevor Douenias scored on a rocket from the left wing to send the game to the fourth with King's ahead 8-5.

King's would pull away in the final stanza, scoring three of the next four goals in the game to seal the victory. The Monarchs got three goals and an assist from Martin, as he fired 14 shots while grabbing four ground balls, and Reape added a goal and team-high three helpers.

Anderson fired 17 shots in the game for King's, scoring twice to go with an assist, and O'Brien also tallied two scores and an assist. Jared Gambino had an all-around strong game, potting a goal along with helping on two others, finishing with six ground balls. Douenias was strong at the face-off dot, posting 13 wins in 22 draws, finishing with a game-high 13 ground balls.

Freshman Jackson Campbell made five stops in the net for the Monarchs, picking up five ground balls, and senior August Axtman tallied three caused turnovers and four loose ball pickups. Senior Jacob Wrede and junior Chris Surina also each added three caused turnovers, while Patrick Burnham finished with two ground balls and two caused mistakes as well.

Immaculata was paced by the two goals by Sean Evans, David Azzarano and Steve Long, while States tallied 23 saves on 60 shots faced. King's won the ground-ball battle 53-22, while successfully clearing 22 of 24 opportunities. It was the most shots in a game for King's since firing 74 February 18, 2017 against Keystone.

King's will head out on the road Saturday afternoon to battle Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA at noon in non-conference action.
