Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Gambino, Campbell Lead King's Men's Lax To 9-6 Win At Lyco

WILLIAMSPORT, PA (February 29, 2020) -- Senior attack Jared Gambino finished with four goals and two assists, while rookie goalkeeper Jackson Campbell allowed just six goals while stopping 13 shots to help catapult the King's College men's lacrosse team to a 9-6, non-conference win over Lycoming College Saturday in play from UPMC Field in Williamsport, PA.

The Monarchs (3-0) stay undefeated after three games for the first time since the 2014 season, when they started 4-0. King's has now won its first two road games for the first time since the 2014 season as well, when the Monarchs won their first three away from Wilkes-Barre.

The energy level was much higher Saturday than during Wednesday's home win over Immaculata, and despite allowing the first goal, King's rallied back to score three straight tallies thanks to a pair from Gambino including one with the extra man. After leading 3-2 going into the second quarter, the host Warriors (2-2) posted a three-goal run to take a 4-3 lead with 11:30 to go in the first half after a goal from Dominick Massaro.

King's would tie the game with just over three minutes to play in the second quarter, as Gabe Vansuch tallied his fourth of the year unassisted to send the game to the intermission deadlocked at four. Both goalkeepers had seven saves for their respective teams in the first half, as Lyco held a 23-19 shot edge through the first 30 minutes.

The Monarchs picked up right where they left off early on in the third quarter, as Gambino scored again to put the Monarchs up 5-4, followed by a goal from freshman Nolan Reape to put King's up two just under two minutes into the third quarter. Massaro and Shain Quigley answered for Lycoming with two man-up scores to send the game into the fourth quarter tied at six.

The fourth quarter proved to be all King's though, as Gambino scored his fourth of the day and third goal to put King's ahead in the contest, this one putting the Monarchs ahead for good with 13:39 to play in regulation. The goal was a great move, as the senior rolled the crease, spun and fired high to put KC up 7-6.

Over the next few minutes, Campbell made two big saves with the second leading King's up the field where the Monarchs would call timeout. After KC talked it over, Vansuch would score inside off a beautiful feed from Gambino to give King's some breathing room. The final dagger came with 55 seconds to go, as Vansuch scored again from Gambino to put the game on ice for King's.

It marked the second straight Saturday afternoon for the Monarchs that a player picked up six points in a game, as Gambino matched Alec Martin's effort, adding three ground balls and six shot attempts. Vansuch tallied three goals, while Martin finished with a goal and an assist. The defensive effort was strong, as senior August Axtman tallied two caused turnovers, and Chris Surina added two caused turnovers and five ground balls to his season ledger.

Additionally, midfielder Trevor Douenias posted four ground balls, and defender Sam Moyer collected five loose balls as well. Campbell had his best game in his young Monarch career, posting 13 saves while adding five ground balls. Lycoming held a 44-33 shot edge on King's, though the Monarchs put 21 on cage to just the 19 by the Warriors. King's was also 21-for-27 on clears Saturday.

Massaro posted two goals and two helpers to pace Lycoming offensively, while Justin Joseph was 11-of-18 on face-off attempts. Cameron Kuzniar made 11 saves in net, while Michael Turck posted one save in 5:26 of action.

The Monarchs return to McCarthy Stadium and Betzler Field Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m., hosting Western Connecticut State University in non-conference action.
