Freshmen Duo Pushes King's Men's Lax Past WCSU Wednesday, 13-9

WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 4, 2020) -- Freshman goalkeeper Jackson Campbell made 21 saves Wednesday afternoon, and classmate Nolan Reape tallied four goals to help lead the King's College men's lacrosse team to a 13-9 home victory over Western Connecticut State University in play from Betzler Field in McCarthy Stadium in non-conference play. The Monarchs moved to 4-0 for the first time since 2014, and has the chance to move to 5-0 Saturday at home against Alfred State for the first time ever.

The Monarchs wasted no time at all hitting the scoreboard, tallying on their first possession as junior Alex Martin tallied his ninth of the season from senior Jared Gambino on a nice high to low shot from the left alley. Not even a minute later, Reape got on the board for the first time, as he went through "X", hit the brakes and rolled crease for a quick shot to make it 2-0.

From that point, the two teams would exchange goals through the rest of the first quarter, as King's took a 5-3 lead into the second half following a tally from Vansuch with 23 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.

Reape got things going on a nice stretch to open the second quarter, as he scored unassisted to start a 4-0 run for the Monarchs capped by an unassisted goal from Martin with 9:41 to go in the first half. WestConn's Eric Caldwell scoerd a pair of tallies just before halftime though to send the game to the break with King's up 9-5.

Campbell was fantastic in the first half, making 13 stops as the Colonials outshot King's over the first 30 minutes 26-20. After halftime, King's continued with their strong defensive output as August Axtman blocked a shot and cleared the ball himself, before Michael O'Brien scored his fifth of the game to put King's up five at 10-5.

After Stephen Cicchetti scored to make it 10-6, junior Trevor Douenais won the ensuing face-off and scored ten seconds later unassisted on a rocket over the keeper's left ear to make it 11-6. King's would continue to push the pace, and with 33 seconds remaining in the third quarter Reape made a great individual effort. The freshman dodged right, spun back left and charged in before firing low for the goal to make it 12-6.

The Colonials outscored the Monarchs 3-1 in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late as King's rolled on for the win. Reape finished with a career-high four goals and five points, adding two ground balls as well in the win. Martin posted three goals and an assist, while Gambino added three points on a goal and two assists with five ground balls.

Douenias was a force on face-offs on Wednesday, going 15-for-26 with a career-high 14 ground balls, and Vansuch finished with two goals as well for King's. Defensively, Chris Surina had a fantastic game with three caused turnovers to go with the first assist of his King's career.

Additionally, Axtman had three caused turnovers and four ground balls while fellow two-sport athlete and senior Gene Gibbons posted three caused turnovers. Junior Sam Moyer also tallied three loose ball pickups, and Campbell had his best game of the season with a career-high 21 saves in net.

WestConn outshot the Monarchs 48-40 on the night, but King's was 27-of-31 on clear attempts thanks to the 21 saves from Jackson. The Monarchs also had a huge edge in the ground ball category, posting a 41-27 edge. Each team was 1-for-6 with the extra man.

Caldwell finished with five points for the Colonials, while Ryan Reuling added two goals and an assist.
