WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 8, 2021) -- King's College Athletics and the wrestling program are thrilled to announce the beginning of renovations to the exisitng Wrestling Room, with the plans to expand and remodel the space while also naming the space for former head coach and legend Ned McGinley.
It is an exciting time for the King's wrestling program and although the wrestling team was not able to compete this winter season because of COVID-19 restrictions, our student-athletes still joined together as a team with all safety measures in place and started to build toward the future. Our team is building upon its storied foundation by focusing on key priorities for the future, which include:
• Build a roster that challenges for a championship in every weight class
• Regain our athletic competitiveness on the national stage and continue to strengthen our academic performance
• Build alumni support and grow fundraising outcomes
• Increase community involvement by supporting youth wrestling in our area
• Implement a mentor program for Freshmen and Upperclassmen leadership development
• Implement and grow PSA database and High School Coaches database to help with recruiting efforts and growing the overall King's wrestling brand
In order to successfully carry out these key priorities, we need to make improvements to the current facilities. Such improvements will enhance our wrestlers' experience and will help us recruit quality student-athletes who can compete on a national level. Perhaps most important, however, is the plan to name this facility after the man who has been the lifeblood of King's wrestling since its inception – Coach Ned McGinley. King's president Fr. Jack Ryan, a wrestler himself, has personally endorsed this recognition of all that Coach Ned has done for the wrestling program, for King's, and for so many Monarchs and members of the community. Coach McGinley started the wrestling program in 1968. In his 48 years of coaching he had 455 dual meet wins, 45 Division III National Tournament qualifiers, 20 MAC Champions, 18 NCAA Division III All-Americans, and 6 NCAA Division III National Finalists just to name a few of his many accomplishments.
To make all of this happen, we need your help. We are grateful for the donors who have already committed to this special project, but it will take a team effort to get it done. As Coach Josh Roosa said, "This project is important in many ways - it will provide our current student athletes a much better training experience, it will greatly help our recruiting efforts, and it is a fitting way to honor legendary Coach Ned McGinley. When finished, this will be one of the best wrestling facilities."
We are working hard to raise the funds necessary so that the improvements to the wrestling facility can be finished in time for the fall. At that time, we plan to unveil the new room and officially dedicate it in Coach McGinley's name. We hope to invite supporters of the project to join us for this special celebration. More information will be shared in the coming months.
Please consider honoring Coach McGinley and supporting the wrestling program with a gift. To make a gift, you can send a check in the postage paid envelope or give online at www.kings.edu/giving (choose Monarch Athletic Fund and type "Wrestling" in the text box). Every donor will be included on a plaque that will be displayed in the wrestling facility.
