Women's Tennis Opens 2021 Season at MAC Individual Championships

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 11, 2021) -- The King's College women's tennis team opened their 2021 fall schedule as they competed in the 2021 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Individual Championships on Saturday afternoon. The Championships, co-hosted by Wilkes University and King's, were held at Kirby Park on a beautiful afternoon in Wilkes-Bare, Pa.

The Monarchs earned singles wins at No. 3 singles as sophomore Jackie Costello went toe-to-toe with Arcadia University's Claire Andrews, dropping the first set 0-6 before rallying to win the final two sets, 6-4 and 11-9, to advance. Costello then dropped the quarterfinal matchup to second-seeded Cassidy Greenman from Wilkes University, 6-1, 6-3.

King's claimed their second victory of the day at No. 5 singles from first year Sarah Stettler, who battled out her collegiate debut with Amy Mayo from FDU-Florham. After losing 6-7 (5-7) in the first set, Stettler battled back, 6-4, 10-8, to advance to the quarterfinals. She then fell to the third-seeded Cassandra Benderavich from Misericordia University, 6-0, 6-1.

The final win for King's on the opening day of the MAC Championships came from junior Emily Morano at No. 6 singles, as she defeated Angie Gaglio from Albright College, 6-1, 6-0. Morano then faced the two-seed in Hannah Olson from Messiah University and dropped the quarterfinal matchup, 6-1, 6-0.

At No. 1 singles, junior Addie Atkins dropped her opening match 6-0, 6-0 to Kirsten Kosa from DeSales University, who advanced to tomorrow's semifinals.

Then at No. 2 singles, sophomore Braelan Drollas fell in the first round, 6-1, 6-0, to FDU-Florham's Kayla Dello Iacono.

At No. 4 singles, sophomore Briana Moraca came out strong to win the first set, 6-4, over Rachel Rineer from Arcadia University. Rineer rallied to win the match with 7-5 and 10-7 wins to end the match.

In doubles play, Atkins and Drollas paired up in the first round but fell to Arcadia's No. 1 doubles team, 8-4. At No. 2 doubles, Moraca and Costello would fall in the first round to Messiah, 8-3, and the No. 3 doubles pair of Stettler and Morano dropped an 8-1 decision to DeSales.

The Monarchs will return to the courts on Saturday, September 25 as they are set to host the King's College Invitational at Kirby Park wiith play beginning at 9:00 a.m.
