WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 13, 2022) -- The King's College football team looks to continue its win streak and extend it to four games this weekend as they head to Reading, Pa. to take on the Albright College Lions in the MAC matchup. The Monarchs are coming off a great team win as they defeated Stevenson University, 20-7, at McCarthy Stadium for their first win over the Mustangs since 2013 and their first home win of the 2022 season. The Lions observed their bye week last weekend, but prior to that contest, Albright fell, 27-0, at Wilkes University on October 1 in Edwardsville, Pa.

The Coaches: Jeff Knarr is in his 13th season (12th with a season) with the Monarchs, as he is only the second coach of King's College football since 1991. Knarr took over for Rich Mannello, who was the head coach since football was reinstated at King's in 1993. Today is the 116th game that Knarr has been the head coach of the Monarchs. Isaac Collins is making his sixth appearance on the sideline as the head coach of the Lions in his first season. Prior to Albright, Collins last served as the defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator, and secondary coach at Division I Bucknell University from 2019 to 2022. He also led fellow-MAC competitor Widener from 2010 to 2012 as the head coach for nine years with a 25-8 record before taking a stint at Seton Hill.

Looking at Albright: Albright enjoyed a bye last weekend, but prior to that they fell 27-0 to Wilkes University down the road in Edwardsville, Pa. Wilkes put scores on the board in each quarter on their way to handing the Lions the shutout loss. As a team, the Lions have totaled 892 total yards of offense for an average of 178.4 yards per game, including 111.4 yards in the run game. Isaiah Shockley leads the individual run game with an average of 45.75 yards per contest on 64 carries, while Michael Starkey adds 22.00 reception yards on five catches for 88 yards. Quarterback Jarren Rutter has appeared in four out of five contests and completed 11 passes on 26 attempts for 182 yards an a touchdown for an average of 45.50 yards per match up, while Alex Gardsy has played in all five games and gone 18-for-47 in completions for 137 yards and a touchdown for 27.40 yards per game. The defensive efforts are led by Sam Viera with 65.0 total tackles, including 45 solo tackles, 3.0 tackles for a loss of 10 yards, 1.0 sacks for a one-yard loss, an interception, and a quarterback hurry. Daniel Vital adds 51.0 tackles and a team-best 3.5 tackles for a loss of seven yards. On special teams, punter Keil Heineman has punted 33 times for 1,081 yards at an average of 32.8 yards per punt with two punts landing inside the 20-yard line and two recording over 50 yards.

Travel Gear: For their fourth road trip of the season, the Monarchs are bring back their al white uniforms. In Albright, King's will be wearing their white jerseys with white pants while dawning their traditional gold helmets.

Single Digit Tough: The Monarchs award single digits based on merit, leadership and are retained throughout their time at King's. King's returned two single digit members from the 2021 season and added two more this past spring. The Monarchs now have five Single Digit Tough players: Mike Karycinski (0), Joseph Carchio (1), Brendan Mozeleski (3), Dallas Solomon (8), and Brandon Cohen (9).

Captains This Weekend: The Single Digit Tough members of the King's football team will be serving as captains this weekend at Albright. Senior Brandon Cohen will represent the offense, while the senior crew of Mike Karycinski, Joseph Carchio, Brendan Mozeleski, and Dallas Solomon will represent the defense.

A Look at the Monarchs:
  • King's returns a core of leaders and role players on both sides of the football in 2022. For the offense, the Monarchs return All-MAC Second Team honoree in Brandon Cohen as he ranked as one of the top tight ends in the MAC, posting 28 catches for 213 yards and two touchdowns for an average of 21.30 yards per game. The defensive unit returns All-MAC First Team selection in Brendan Mozeleski as he ranked fifth in the conference with 83 total tackles for an average of 8.3 per contest. His 1.20 tackles for loss also ranked ninth in the MAC last season.
  • The Monarchs return 28 seniors on their roster, including seven who have returned for their fifth year of collegiate eligibility. Sixteen of those 28 are listed on this week's two-deep, including 13 projected as starters.
  • King's comes into this year's season with a total of 11 coaches on staff, and of that group three are King's graduates (Ben Bakanas, Joe Damiano, Tommy Gilmore). 
  • King's was picked to finish eighth in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll among the 11 conference schools. Albright was slated tenth.
  • The Monarchs defense ranks fourth in the MAC as they are holding teams to an average of 269.4 yards per game, including a MAC third-best 79.6 rushing yards per contest. Their defensive efficiency rating is second among conference opponents at 95.5 percent.
  • Additionally, the King's defense puts on the pressure as they lead the conference in interceptions with nine total interceptions for 110 return yards and a touchdown. They also have totaled a MAC fourth-best 13 sacks for a loss of 97 yards.
  • The offense sits at second overall as they have averaged 219.2 yards per night for a conference third-best offensive efficiency rating of 132.3.
  • Special teams has matching fourth-highest rankings as the kickoff return game ranks fourth at 21.5 yards per return and the punt return team is averaging a fourth-highest 8.0 yards per return.
  • Individually, Tyler Moore ranks second among MAC quarterbacks with an efficiency of 132.2, completing 84 passes on 142 attempts at a 59.2 completion percentage, for six touchdowns and an average of 219.2 yards per contest.
  • King's now has its top three receivers in the top-15 of the MAC, as Tyler Carey ranks second at 84.6 yards per game on 18 catches with a conference-high five touchdowns. Michael DiGregorio ranks sixth with 45.2 yards per game, while Brandon Cohen places 11th at 38.2 receiving yards per contest.
  • Carey and placekicker Kyle Prescavage fall in the top five of the AMC in scoring, as Carey is averaging 6.0 points per game and Prescavage is posting 5.2 points per contest.
  • Prescavage continues to shine as one of the best kickers in the MAC, currently tied for second with 1.0 field goals per game, converting on 5-of-9 attempts. His 42-yard field goal against Delaware Valley still stands as the second-longest in the MAC so far this season.

Up Next: King's will return to McCarthy Stadium next weekend for Family and Friends Weekend. The Monarchs will face off against Lebanon Valley College with a noon kick-off in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
