Women's Volleyball Sweeps Third Tri-Match at Home Over Medgar Evers and Yeshiva

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 23, 2022)-- The King's College Monarchs women's volleyball team continued their home tri-match success on Saturday afternoon at McGrane Gymnasium. They came away with 3-0 sweeps over the Medgar Evers College Cougars and the Yeshiva University Maccabees. The Monarchs are a perfect 6-0 in home tri-matches this season and have not lost a single home tri-match set this year. With this win the team extends their non-conference home winning streak 27, as they improve to 17-8 on the season. With two losses on the day, Medgar Evers falls to 1-17 on the year. With the tri-match split, Yeshiva is now 1-11 on the season.

vs. Medgar Evers College - W, 3-0 (25-4, 25-5, 25-9): The Monarchs never trailed in the three sets against the Cougars and were just tied up once.
In the opening set, the Monarchs went on two massive streaks of 10 and seven points. Towards the end, Carly Shire had three service aces as the team took the first set 25-4.

Morgan Williams opened the second set with five service aces. A 15-3 run in the set lifted the Monarchs to another commanding victory of 25-5. As a team, the Monarchs put up a game-high 12 kills in the set.

The Cougars kept things closer early on in the third set, but the Monarchs went on a thrilling seven point streak. The streak featured kills by Kathy Shepherd, Theresa Lynch and Mia Campanile along with a Shepherd service ace. Joy Kindall had two late kills as the Monarchs closed out their sweep of Medgar Evers with a 25-9 victory. 

The Monarchs outplayed the opposition in every category hitting .396 with 28 kills, 21 service aces, a block, 26 assists and 18 digs. Lynch led the team with seven digs followed by Shepherd with five and Campanile with four. Williams served up six aces in the set. Shepherd had five aces and Adriana Conforti three. Keely Hoban had a team-high 15 kills which were followed by seven from Shire. Kayla Sondberg led the defense with seven digs, followed by three from Williams and Campanile.

First year Britonya Lloyd had two kills and five digs for the Cougars. Junior Cristina Carnegie led the team with three assists.  

vs. Yeshiva University - W,3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-8):
The Monarchs looked to continue to take control of things against the Maccabees, and they did just that. The team took an early 17-1 lead thanks to kills by Shepherd, Shire and Sondberg along with a Conforti service ace. The team came away with a 25-10 win. 

The Maccabees made things interesting the following set. This set saw eight different ties and six lead changes. A 12-1 run put the Monarchs up by a commanding score of 20-10. The Monarchs never looked back from there as they took set two by the final of 25-12.

Looking to close out the day with another sweep at home, the two teams traded points early on in the third set. With the Monarchs up 8-7, King's exploded with nine straight points, as Kindall had both a kill and service ace in that stretch. Bella Salvia capped off the day an ace as the Monarchs took the final set 25-8. 

As a team the Monarchs recorded 44 kills, nine service aces, a block, 40 assists, 34 digs and hit .348. Shepherd led the team with a career-high 16 kills. Sondberg registered 14 while Kindall had eight. Conforti had five service aces. Sondberg and Kindall each had one. Shire led the team with 25 assists and Hoban put up 14. Defensively, Conforti was atop the team  with seven digs. This was followed by Devan Moses with six and Morgan Bryant with five. 

For the Maccabees, senior Emily Zrihen had four kills. First year Shany Elmaleh had two service aces while senior Tali Miller recorded six assist. Junior Aleesa Elbaum tallied 16 digs. 

The Monarchs will be back in action at McGrane Gymnasium on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. when they host Arcadia University. This will be their final Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom home matchup of the season..
