Women's Tennis Posts Split to Earn First Team Win of the Season

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 2, 2022) -- After falling to Stevens Institute of Technology, 9-0, in MAC Freedom play on Saturday morning, the King's College women's tennis team picked up their first team win, 9-0, over Penn College on Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs improve to 1-9 overall with the win and drop to 0-1 in MAC Freedom play.

vs. Stevens - L, 0-9:
Junior Addie Atkins fell by matching 6-0 sets at No. 1 singles to Agatha Malinowski. At No. 2 singles, first year Ashley Kenia dropped her own matching sets of 6-1 to Audrey Heaberlin. Sophomore Briana Moraca lost by 6-1 and 6-0 decisions to Alexis Fuda at No. 3 singles.

Then in No. 4 singles play, junior Emily Morano battled but lost 6-3 and 6-0 to Isabella Dona. No. 5 singles action featured first year Hailey D'Amato dropping a pair of 6-1 losses to Emma Eguia. Sophomore Jackie Costello fell by scores of 6-2 and 6-1 to Juliette Marchisio at No. 6 singles.

Doubles play saw Atkins and Kenia fall at No. 1 doubles, D'Amato and Morano lose at No.2 doubles, and first year Sarah Stettler and sophomore Braelan Drollas drop a decision at No. 3 doubles all by the score of 8-2 to the Ducks pairings.

vs. Penn College - W, 9-0:
Atkins earned her win at No. 1 singles over Delaney Bouton, 6-3 and 6-1. Kenia defeated Mary Kathryn Hillman by scores of 6-1 and 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Then Moraca handed Georgia Macensky losses of 6-0 and 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

In No. 4 singles play, Morano defeated Amber Leitzel by sets of 6-2 and 6-1. D'Aamato earned a victory at No. 5 singles against Alexis Youse, 6-1 and 6-0. And Costello handed Sostika Rai losses of 6-3 and 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

Atkins and Kenia earned their second wins of the day at No. 1 doubles, defeating the Wildcats pair in a hard-fought 8-7 (9-7) win. D'Amato and Drollas earned their gritty win at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-7 (7-4), and Morano and Costello defeated the Wildcats 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

The Monarchs are back on the courts at Kirby Park on Tuesday, April 5 as they host cross-town rival Wilkes University at 3:00 p.m. in MAC Freedom play.
