Women's Volleyball Prevails 3-1 in Hard-Fought Match Over Bryn Mawr

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 29, 2022)- The King's College Monarchs women's volleyball team returned to McGrane Gymnasium and played another close one on Thursday night. They came away with a 3-1 win over the Bryn Mawr College Owls. Three of the four sets ended by the closest of margins possible. With this win, the Monarchs improve to 9-4 overall and extend their non-conference home winning streak to 23.  The Owls drop to 6-7. 

The team fell behind early in the first set 9-4. They found their way back with a six-point streak thanks to kills by Joy Kindall and Kathy Shepherd accompanied by two service aces by Morgan Williams to take an 11-9 lead. The opening set saw five different lead changes. The action came right down to the wire but Kindall and Shepherd came through again with big attacks to give the Monarchs a close 25-23 win.

The Monarchs trailed early again in the second set as the Owls got off to a 6-0 lead. Nonetheless they were able to climb back into things with a 12-7 stretch. The team found themselves in another hole trailing 21-14. But the attack came through as Adriana Conforti had two service aces to aid a seven-point streak and tie things up at 21. Shepherd got another late kill as the Monarchs concluded the set with a 4-2 run to take another one by the score of 25-23.

Each time it looked as though the Monarchs were on pace to take a big lead in the third set, the Owls had something else to say. The opposition went on a late 8-2 run to stay alive and take the third set by the same score as the previous two. 

Looking to close things out in the fourth set, the King's trailed early 6-2. But they scored four straight to tie things up at six. After the Owls had a quick run and took a 10-7 lead, the Monarchs went on a massive 12-2 run, inching their way towards a victory. The other team had a response however going on a 10-5 tear to pull within two at 24-22. But Bella Salvia came through with a kill to salvage the fourth set 25-22. The Monarchs are now 6-1 at home. 

The Monarchs got the better of the Owls in most stat categories. As a team they registered 52 kills versus 44 for Bryn Mawr. Kindall led the attack again with 17 kills as Kayla Sondberg followed with 11. Conforti had five of the Monarchs 10 aces while Kindall and Salvia registered three blocks. On defense, Williams and Devan Moses tied for the team lead with 19 digs and Morgan Bryant had 16.  Conforti had a team-high 19 assists and Carly Shire was second with 15. As a team the Monarchs also had more digs (86-81), assists (49-40) and aces (10-9) than the opposition. 

First year Elise Perry had a game-high 22 kills which were followed by 11 from sophomore Zoe Boxill. Perry also registered five blocks while senior Sydney Collins served up five aces. Orli-Berk McGuire had the most digs in the game with 31. First year Anna Dravk recorded 36 assists. 

The Monarchs will look to continue their success at McGrane Gymnasium on Saturday as they host a tri-match for the second week in a row where they will face Immaculata University at 11:00 a.m. and Lehman College at 3:00 p.m.
