WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 12, 2023) -- With the official start date of the 2023-24 season just three days away, Head Coach JP Andrejko and the King's College Athletic Department are pleased to announce the addition of Matt Dessoye to the men's basketball coaching staff.
Dessoye joins the Monarchs after a successful playing career at nearby Penn State Scranton, amassing 2,000 collegiate points in his time on the court. The local Wilkes-Barre, Pa. product appeared in 47 games with 46 starts for the Nittany Lions, averaging 19.6 points per game on a 43.3 shooting percentage. The point guard also contributed 4.3 assists per contest with a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio while adding 3.5 boards and 1.3 steals a night.
For his efforts, Dessoye earned two PSUAC All-Star nods, a USCAA All-American honor, and collected Penn State Scranton's Male Athlete of the Year award in 2022. Additionally, he was a two-time team captain for the Nittany Lions and also served as an athletic ambassador.
Off the court, he completed an internship as an Athletic Department Assistant where he was involved in men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, women's basketball, baseball, and softball. His duties included game day setup and clean up, stat keeping, announcing, photography, and live feed commentary. Dessoye also maintained rosters and schedules and photo galleries on the Penn State Scranton athletics website. He graduated in 2022 with a degree in business and a concentration in marketing and management.
"I'm very excited to join the staff and learn as much as possible about coaching at the college level from Coach Andrejko and Coach Gray, as well as help the program continue to be successful," said Dessoye.
Prior to his time at Penn State Scranton, Dessoye spent two seasons at Luzerne County Community College where he earned Team MVP honors in both his seasons and stands as the third all-time leading scorer in program history.
His coaching experience includes a lengthy stint with Hanover Area from 2017 to 2023 where he was instrumental in assisting with day-to-day organization of practice and games. Dessoye worked closely with his student-athletes to aid in the college recruitment and application process as well as oversee fundraising and scouting duties for the team.
"I am very excited to have Matt join our staff," stated Andrejko. "Our players will love his passion and enthusiasm for the game. It has been fun watching Matt grow from a young man at my summer basketball camp, throughout his playing career, and now entering into the coaching profession."
Dessoye's duties will include recruiting, scouting, practice preparation, and administrative tasks as a member of the King's men's basketball coaching staff.
