WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 2, 2023) -- With the final two weekends of the 2023 regular season upon us, the King's College football team looks to pick up a big Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) win on the road on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson University. Both teams look to bounce back after tough losses last weekend as the Monarchs fell, 31-14, at Widener, while the Mustangs dropped a 21-14 decision at #25 Delaware Valley.

The Coaches: Skyler Fultz opens his first season as the head coach of the Monarchs with Saturday's contest. Fultz spent the last eight seasons in his second stint with King's, serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. During his time at King's, the Monarchs have turned into an offensive powerhouse, as his offensive units have produced All-MAC players at all positions while boasting record-setting units during each of his years as offensive coordinator. The 2023 campaign featured quarterback Tyler Moore's record-breaking season, setting four new career passing records and both touchdowns in a game and in a season records under the direction of Fultz. Ed Hottle is in his 14th season at Stevenson, totaling a 70-49 overall record in his time with the Mustangs. Hottle aas led Stevenson to seven straight postseason appearances, dating back to the 2014 season with six consecutive winning seasons from 2014-20. Individually, Hottle has coached four major MAC award winners and 92 All-MAC honorees to go along with nine All-Region players.

Looking at Stevenson: The Mustangs are coming off a highly-anticipated match up with Delaware Valley last weekend, falling by a touchdown on the road in Doylestown. Stevenson looks to secure a spot in the postseason with this weekend's game against the Monarchs. As a team, the Mustangs are scoring 32.25 points on 373.5 yards per game while limiting opponents to 17.25 points on 271.0 yards of total offense per contest. While the passing game match up has been determined by about a yard, the Mustangs control the run game as they are averaging 176.0 yards per game while limiting opponents to 72.6 yards per contest. Stevenson is led in the run game by Louis Couser with 73.57 yards per game and eight touchdowns, while Pat Gorman is the go-to receiver with 80.25 yards per game on 44 catches and four touchdowns. Defensively, Stevenson is paced by Clarence Travis with 47.0 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles, while Gavin Shields adds 46.0 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, four break ups, and two hurries.

Travel Gear: This weekend, the Monarchs will wear their traditional golf helmets and white jerseys just as last weekend, but this week they will sport their golf pants.

Single Digit Tough: The Monarchs award single digits based on merit, leadership and are retained throughout their time at King's. The 2023 roster returned two single-digit members from last year while adding four more ahead of this season. The Monarchs now have six Single Digit Tough players: Jassiem Lettsome (0), Joe Carchio (1), Teone Sherrod (2), Tyler Carey (3), Dallas Solomon (8), and Nate McGlone (73).

Captains This Weekend: King's will send out three captains for the coin toss this weekend, including Joe Carchio, Dallas Solomon, and Nate McGlone.

A Look at the Monarchs:
  • King's will look to replace three All-MAC players in Brandon Cohen (TE), Tyler Moore (QB), and Brendan Mozeleski (LB), but return the remaining five honorees in first teamer Teone Sherrod (CB), second team honorees Tyler Carey (WR/Returner), Dallas Solomon (DL), and Joe Carchio (DB), and honorable mention recipient Amir Gibson (DB)
  • Teone Sherrod returns after a breakout campaign in 2022, earning AFCA Division III Coaches' All-America First Team, D3football.com All-America Second Team, and D3football.com All Region 1 First Team honors. Sherrod was also a Cliff Harris Award Finalist and earned a spot on the D3football.com Preseason All-America Third Team. He returns to help lead the Monarchs secondary that lead the MAC in interceptions.
  • The Monarchs have no shortage of veteran talent on this year's squad, returning nine players that were listed as seniors in 2022. This week's two-deep features 18 seniors listed, while the defense returns all but three starters from 2022.
  • King's enters the season with a total of 12 coaches on staff, and of that group five are King's graduates or soon-to-be graduates. (Ben Bakanas, Brandon Cohen, Tommy Gilmore, Brendan Mozeleski, Enzo Poulson).
  • King's was picked to finish third in the MAC Preseason Coaches' Poll among the 10 conference schools. Stevenson was slated to finish second.
  • The Monarch defense has remained strong throughout the season, ranking third in scoring defense (18.1 points per game), second in total defense (242.2 yards per game), first in passing defense (127.5 yards per game), and second in passing defensive efficiency (100.6%).
  • On special teams, King's ranks second in punt returns (9.2 yards per return), second in kickoffs (38.5 net gain), and third in punting (33.0 net yards per punt).
  • King's has focused on conversions this year, ranking second in their own first downs (18.3 per game) and second in third down conversions (40.4%). On defense King's leads in opponent first downs (13.8 per game) and second in fourth down conversions (35.3%).
  • Russell Minor-Shaw is fifth in the MAC in rushing yards at 65.4 per game, while Jayon Hailey (13th) and Brennan Robinson (17th) also fall in the top 35 rushers.
  • King's offense also has four receivers in the top 24 led by Mike DiGreogrio in ninth at 44.4 yards per game, followed by Hailey (11th), EJ Schreiner (14th), and Tyler Carey (23rd).
  • DiGregorio continues to keep his stance as the top punt returner in the conference, averaging 9.8 yards per punt return while also ranking fifth in kickoff returns with Carey following in ninth. On the flip side, Anthony Prato ranks second in the MAC at 37.8 yards per punt.
  • Defensively, King's is led by Joe Carchio who ranks fifth in the MAC with 63 total tackles, while Jared Reto places 10th (56). Jake Ruppert (23rd) and Colin Hazelton (31st) are also among the top-35 tacklers so far in the conference.
  • Hazelton and Carchio also place in the top five in tackles for loss, led by Hazelton in second with 13.0 and Carchio in fourth with 12.0. Dallas Solomon also appears among the MAC leaders with 7.0 tackles for loss.
Up Next: King's will return home to McCarthy Stadium to finish the 2023 regular season next Saturday, November 11 as they host Alvernia University. The Monarchs will honor its seniors prior to the 1:00 p.m. kickoff in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
