Anderson and Kibler Take Third in Annual Ned McGinley Invitational

WILKES-BARRE, PA (November 2, 2024) -- The King's College wrestling team hosted their annual Ned McGinley Invitational on Saturday in McGrane Gymnasium. The Monarchs finished 10th out of 15 schools with Cole Anderson (125) and Shane Kibler (149) taking home third place finishes.
 
Cole Anderson – 125
Anderson came out on top in his first bout of the day against Daniel Verscharen of Washington & Jefferson with a 19-4 technical fall. The junior took on Roger Williams' Zach Henault and defeated him in 2:21. Anderson continued his assault with a 15-5 major decision win over Jacob Deysher of Rochester Institute of Technology. The veteran wrestler fell to Harrison Gordan of New York University by pinfall in 1:20. In his final match of the afternoon, Anderson pinned Thomas Fischer in 6:28 to take the podium at third place in the 125-weight class.
 
Dominic May – 125
May competed against Castleton's Ryan Vanguilder in his first match as a Monarch and fell in the first period at 2:01. The first year lost to Holden Dubois of Washington & Jefferson by pinfall in 2:01.
 
Nick Germano – 133
Germano started the day off strong with a 16-0 technical fall against Shenandoah's Xavier Ramsey. The junior wrestler was dropped by Jacob Venezia of New York University in a 17-3 major decision. Germano fell to New York University's James Carlock in a 5-2 decision.
 
Angel Avalos – 141
Avalos defeated Lucas Lapinski of New York University in a 14-8 decision for his match of the day. The first year wrestler lost his second bout against Corey Haney of USMMA by pinfall in 0:14. Avalos was pinned by Wilkes' Michael Richardson in 1:53.
 
Brian Hopkins – 141
Hopkins battled hard against Luke Pires of Rochester Institute of Technology but succumbed to a pinfall loss in 2:10. The sophomore was defeated in a 17-2 technical fall to regionally ranked MAC opponent Daniel Barra of York.
 
Noah Clawson – 141
Clawson controlled his matchup against Wilkes' Ethan Washburn and stood victorious in a 15-0 technical fall. The veteran wrestler rolled over Jude Bellantoni of Rochester Institute of Technology with a 14-0 major decision win. In his third match of the day, Clawson fell to Washington & Jefferson's Hunter Swedish in a 17-2 technical fall. The Monarch lost his final bout against MAC opponent Jacob Fryzbek of York by pinfall in 2:50.
 
MJ Turi – 149
Turi had a hard-fought battle against Hunter's Jayden Medina and stood victorious in a 5-4 decision after a takedown with 0:53 left of the third period. The sophomore continued his pursuit to the podium with a 2-0 decision win over Ben Grater of Wilkes. Turi competed against teammate Shane Kibler in the quarterfinals and lost in a 9-5 decision between the two Monarchs. He was defeated by Jared Lee of Rochester Institute of Technology in a 11-0 major decision to end the day for Turi.
 
Shane Kibler – 149
Kibler competed against Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) opponent George Pavis of Stevens and won in a 17-5 major decision. The junior defeated Shenandoah's Manny Lucas by a 17-3 decision. It was the battle of the Monarchs as Kibler took on teammate MJ Turi and remained victorious in a 9-5 decision. He finally met his match and was defeated in the semi-finals by MAC rival Carmen Cortese of Stevens in a 9-3 decision. Kibler gained a podium finish for third place against Stevens' Tyler Roe for a 11-4 decision win.
 
Bret Murphy – 157
Murphy lost in a 4:20 pinfall by MAC competitor Ryan Smith of Stevens. The senior received a bye before dropping New York University's Thomas Lapinski in 3:54. Murphy went on to defeat Jack Forte of Roger Williams in a 15-0 fall. He gained a medical forfeit win over Josh Sam of Rochester Institute of Technology. In Murphy's pursuit to the podium, Shenandoah's Cannon Long stopped the Monarch in a 4:45 pinfall.
 
Isaiah Camacho – 157
Camacho was defeated by Kellen Smith of USMAPS in 4:36. The first year rallied and dropped MAC opponent Pierre-Joven Fuentes II of York in 2:14. Camacho lost his final match in a 12-1 major decision to Castleton's Blake Sastre.
 
Jordan Bentley – 157
Bentley lost by pinfall in 1:58 against Wilkes' Brayden Shannon. The first year wrestler battled hard against Noah Diamond of Shenandoah but was pinned at 4:55 in the second round.
 
Alex Ballantyne – 174
Ballantyne pestered Vincent Vogan of USMMA through three rounds, but ultimately lost in a 6-4 decision. The junior fell in an 8-3 decision to Keystone's Mariano Monacelli.
 
Frankie Theroux – 184
Theroux won his first match of the day against Wilkes' Jared Orbin in a 17-1 decision. The junior was defeated by Jessie Orbin Jessie Orbin in a medical forfeit. Theroux did not compete in his last bout of the day.
 
Jake Bobersky – 184
Bobersky stood victorious in his first match for King's as he dropped Eric Power of Roger Williams in 2:05. The first year fell to New York University's Trent Furman in 1:55. Bobersky lost by pinfall to Mark Dickey of New York University in 6:04.
 
Richard Fronheiser – 197
Fronheiser lost his first bout of the afternoon in McGrane Gymnasium against Luke Dupont of New York University in a 19-9 major decision.  The Monarch then received a bye before defeating Hunter's Dane Henry in a 17-0 technical fall. Fronheiser pinned Quincy Bonville of Rochester Institute of Technology in 3:21. The senior fell to USMAP's Ryland Whitworth in 2:30 to end the day.
 
Michael Mack – 285
Mack was defeated to regionally ranked Caleb Burkhart of Wilkes by 1:12 pinfall. The first year fell to teammate Preston Spontarelli in 1:12.
 
Preston Spontarelli – 285
Spontarelli dropped his first match against MAC opponent Derek Martin of York in an 11-1 major decision. The first year received a bye before defeating teammate Michael Mack by pinfall in 1:12. Spontarelli was defeated by Roger Williams' Jayden Toppan in an 8-4 decision.
 
Ryan Tran – 285
Tran battled hard against Wilkes' Luke Abilio but ultimately lost in a 22-4 technical fall. The Monarch fell to Keonta Crawford of Castleton in 0:52.
 
King's will be back on the mats on Saturday, November 16th to take on Gettysburg at 10 a.m. in Bream Gym. The Monarchs will travel to Michigan for the Comet Duals hosted by the University of Olivet at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 23rd.
