FIORINO SCORED CAREER HIGH 35 POINTS AS LADY MONARCHS DOWN DEL-VAL, 75-66
WILKES-BARRE – Senior guard Kaitlyn Fiorino scored a career-high 35 points and moved into third place on the King's College women's basketball all-time scoring list as the Lady Monarchs posted a 75-66 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 5-8 overall and 3-2 in Freedom Conference play. Delaware Valley, meanwhile, slipped to 6-5 and 2-2 in league games,
King's trailed 22-20 with 4:03 left in the first half but King's outscored the Aggies12-0 the rest of the way to take a 32-22 lead into the break. Fiorino paced the Lady Monarchs in the opening half by scoring 19 of her team's points. Fiorino moved into third place on a three-pointer with 8:50 remaining in the first half.
In the second half King's would slowly extend its lead and built a 16-points lead at 55-39 with 8:31 remaining on a layup by Paige Carlin. The Aggies fought back and cut the lead to 55-49 on a three-pointer from Kim Vennera. King's, however, used three-pointers from Carlin and Fiorino to power its way back to a 66-65 advantage with 3:16 on the clock. After the Aggies came to within 66-57, Fiorino tallied four of King's next five points to put the game away as the Lady Monarchs took a 71-57 lead with 1:23 to play.
Fiorino bettered her previous career best of 31 points set last season. In the process, she also moved into third-place all-time in Lady Monarch history with 1,330 points. She entered the game with 1,295 points and needed nine to pass Patti Thomas, who tallied 1,303 points form 1984-87, to move into third place on King's scoring list. Fiorino was 11-of-27 from the floor, made7-of-13 from three-point range, and connected on 6-of-8 foul shots. She also contributed with five rebounds and two assists.
Carlin was King's only other player to reach double-figures in scoring, registering 11 points with 10 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Brittany Muscatell netted nine points with six rebounds and five assists while Katie Miller, Kayla Dick, and Kaitlyn Malshefski netted five points apiece.
Vennera paced the Aggies with 22 points while Jackie Shunkwiler tallied 17 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lady Monarchs return to action Monday with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Richard Stockton College in Pomona, NJ
