ALBRIGHT DEFEATS KING'S 73-65 TO WIN LADY MONARCH CLASSIC TITLE

(Susquehanna Downs Rutgers-Camden in Consolation Game)

 

WILKES-BARRE -- Senior guard Bre Dillon scored 20 points to earn tournament most valuable player honors as the Albright College women's basketball team defeated host King's College 73-65 in the championship game of the Lady Monarch Classic Sunday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, Albright, a 2008 NCAA Division III national qualifier, improved to 8-4 on the year while King's slipped to 4-7.

The teams played on even terms through much of the opening half as the scored was deadlocked 21-21 with 6:53 left on the clock. A jumper by Mallory Olshefski would ignite a 12-2 run by the Lady Lions who forged a 33-23 advantage with 3:51 remaining.

King's cut the lead to 35-31 on back-to-back three-pointers by Brittany Muscatell and Kaitlyn Malshefski with 1:46 on the clock, but Albright

responded with a 5-0 surge thanks to a three-pointer by Marilynn McMonagle and a short jumper from Gina Zantopolous to take a 40-31 lead into the break.

In the second half, Malshefski cut the lead to 40-33 with a pair of early foul shots but Albright again took command with a 13-6 spurt to build a

53-39 lead with 14:30 remaining in the contest.  The Lady Lions would take their biggest lead of the game at 18 points when a lay-up by Dillon pushed the3 score to 65-47 with 6:37 left.

The Lady Monarchs would attempt to tally and used a 14-6 run to narrow the margin to 71-61 with 2:50 remaining, but Albright would walk away with the team title.

Dillon was 8-of-11 from the field while adding six assists and four rebounds to earn top player honors. Jessica McGuiness tallied 15 points and six

rebounds to earn a spot on the all-tournament team, while Annie McMahon contributed 11 points and seven boards to also earn a spot on the all-tournament squad.

For King's, senior Kaitlyn Fiorino was named to the all-tournament team after scoring a team-high 12 points with three rebounds. Krystina Durako followed with 10 points and seven rebounds while Katie Miller also added 10 points with three boards. Kaitlyn Malshefski and Kayla Dick netted seven points each. 

 

King's freshman forward Julianna Lynott was named the recipient of the annual John J. Dorish Sportsmanship Award named in memory of the late King's

Director of Athletics.  Lynott posted double-double in Saturday's opening win over Rutgers-Camden by registering 10 points and 10 rebounds. In the title game, she added four points and four rebounds.

 

King's will return to action Thursday with a 6:00 p.m. home contest against Gwynedd-Mercy.

SUSQUEHANNA DOWNS RUTGERS-CAMDEN IN LADY MONARCH CLASSIC CONSOLATION GAME

 

WILKES-BARRE -- Susquehanna University opened up a 33-13 halftime lead and never trailed as the Crusaders defeated Rutgers-Camden 71-29 in the consolation game of the Lady Monarch Classic Sunday at King's College.

 

With the win, Susquehanna improved to 9-3 on the year while Rutgers-Camden slipped to 0-10 Rachael Hughes led a balanced Susquehanna attack with 14 points. All-tournament selection Jennifer Butts added 11 points and two rebounds in just 17 minutes of play. Libby Shober added 11 points and five rebounds while Ashley Watkins tallied 10 points. Nikki Schneck and Jessica Zingarelli netted seven and six points respectively.

Rutgers-Camden was paced by all-tournament choice Karima Blackwell with 11 points and five rebounds. Stephanie Deisley chipped in with eight points and five rebounds.
