KING'S WOMEN DROP 66-61 DECISION TO FERRUM ON FINAL DAY OF MARYMOUNT TIP-OFF CLASSIC
ARLINGTON, VA -- The King's College women's basketball team fell behind by 12 points and the half, and despite a second-half rally, were unable to make a complete comeback as the Lady Monarchs dropped a 66-61 decision to Ferrum College in the third-place/fifth place game at the eight-team, three-day Marymount Tip-Off Classic Sunday in Arlington, Va.
After going 1-2 in their three tournament games at Marymount, King's fell to 1-3 on the year while Ferrum improved to 2-1.
The Lady Monarchs fell behind 5-0 and did not score until the 14:38 mark of the first half on an inside basket by Julianna Lynott. King's would patiently chip away and eventually took a 14-12 lead following three-pointers from Katlin Michaels and Kayla Dick 10:52 left in the half.
With the score tied at 19-19 at the 8:06 mark, Ferrum went on a 13-3 run over the next 7:21 to build a 32-22 advantage with 1:45 on the clock. After the Lady Monarchs cut the lead to 32-25 on a Brittany Muscatell three-pointer at 1:22, but Ferrum closed out the first half with a 7-2 spurt to take a 39-27 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, King's immediate fought back with a 11-2 run and closed to within 41-36 following a three-pointer by Muscatell and a layup from Michael with 17:05 to remaining in the contest. Ferrum would regroup and countered with a 10-2 run of its own over the next 3:20 to register its biggest lead of the game at 51-38 on an Ashley Jordan jumper with 13:45 remaining.
But King's would not fold and the Lady Monarchs again battled back to cut the margin to 52-47 on a Jess Segilia three-pointer with 7:21 on the clock. After a Ferrum three-pointer pushed the lead back to eight points, King's cut the deficit to 55-50 on a Nina Magan trey with 4:40 to go. Ferrum, however, would answer again, this time with a quick 9-2 surge over the next 2:55 to stretch the lead to 64-52 on a bucket by Brittney Bullock with 0:45 to play in the contest.
King's attempted to come back one last time with three consecutive three-pointers from Muscatell, Celia Rader, and Megan Rigous to claw back to within 64-61 with 0:21 remaining. King's had one last chance to tie the score up when the Lady Monarchs were forced to foul with at 0:18 and Tonya Wright missed the first end of a one-and-one. King's, however, was unable to secure the rebound as Bullock snared the offensive board and was fouled, making both free throws with 0:15 left to seal the victory.
Muscatell led King's with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals while Michaels followed with nine points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Rader contributed eight points off the bench while Lynott added six points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Magan and Dick chipped in with six points apiece.
Bullock paced Ferrum with 20 points while Norton and Wright followed with 18 and 16 points respectively.
King's will be idle until after Thanksgiving when the Lady Monarchs make their home debut November 30 with a 6:00 p.m. home matchup with Widener University.
