WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's basketball team built a 27-21 half-time lead and held off a number of Widener University second-half surges as the Lady Monarchs posted a 61-55 victory in their season-opener Monday in Scandlon Gym.
With the win, King's improved to 2-3 on the year while Widener, the defending Commonwealth Conference champion, slipped to 3-3.
King's w built a 34-25 second half lead before Widener cut the lead to 34-33 on a Kate Dellinger bucket with 14:16 remaining. The Lady Monarchs pushed the lead back to 42-35 on a three-pointer by Katlin Michaels with 11:41 on the clock.
After Widener battled back to trim the lead to 46-44 on a layup by Alex Held with 5:41 remaining, King's used a three-pointer by Megan Rigous, a pair of foul shots from Brittany Muscatell, and two foul shots from Michaels to stetch the lead to 53-45 with 3:07 on the clock.
Widener would cut the lead to 56-51 on a Rayne Reber jumper at 0:45, but Muscatell made five of six free throws and Paige Carlin made two-of-two from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the victory.
King's was led by Muscatell with 13 points and four assists while Julianna Lynott added 12 points and nine rebounds. Rigous also netted 12 points with three three-pointers while Michaels and Carlin chipped in with nine and eight points respectively.
Widener was led by Held with 14 points while Case Pritz added 11.
King's returns to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. home matchup with Eastern University in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams.
