LADY MONARCH BASKETBALL SECURES 82-62 VICTORY OVER WILKES

WILKES-BARRE --  Paige Carlin scored 21 points to pace three double-figure scorers as the King's College women's basketball team posted a 82-62 victory over cross-town rival Wilkes University Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, King's improved to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in Freedom Conference play. Wilkes, meanwhile, slipped to 3-12 and 1-4.

Wilkes stormed out to an early 7-1 lead on the strength of five points from Megan Kazmerski. The Lady Colonels maintained the lead but King's slowly chipped away and took its first lead of the game at 16-15 when Carlin made good on a pair of foul shots with 8:34 left in the opening stanza. The Lady Monarchs extended the advantage to 22-18 on a Megan Rigous bucket but the Lady Colonels countered on a Angela Palmerio lay-up with 7:16 remaining in the half, cutting the lead to 22-20.

From there, King's used four straight points from Carlin, and buckets from Rigous and Molly Dahl to ignite a  critical 16-0 run as a three-point play from Abby Malloy converted a traditional three-point play to give King's a 38-20 lead with 2:46 left in the half. Wilkes cut the lead to 40-26 on a lay-up from Morgan Thomas, who played the first semester at King's before transferring to Wilkes, along with a three-pointer by Erin Schneider at 0:42.  But the Lady Monarchs took a 42-26 lead into the break when Malloy scored following an offensive rebound at the buzzer.

In the second half, King's eventually built a 22-point when Rigous scored on a driving lay-up with 1:31 to play as the score swelled to 58-36.  King's would maintain control the rest of the way as Wilkes came no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

Carlin was 5-of-8 from the field  and was rewarded for her aggressive drives to the basket by making 9-of-12 free throws. She also tallied six steals, four rebounds, and four assists. Rigous netted 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting while Mallow also canned 11 points after going 5-of-9 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the foul line. Julianna Lynott added six points and 13 rebounds, Brittany Muscatell contributed six points, four assists, and three steals, while Dahl posted six points and five rebounds.

Wilkes was led by Lindsey Gosse with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Kazmerski added 11 points, nine boards, and three assists. Lyndsay Ellis chipped in with eight points and three rebounds.
