NEUMANN SPOILS LADY MONARCHS' HOME DEBUT WITH 71-47 VICTORY
WILKES-BARRE — Visiting Neumann College raced out to a 34-19 halftime lead while wreaking havoc on the offensive glass as the visiting Knights spoiled the King's College women's basketball team's season debut with a 71-47 victory Thursday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, Neumann, the defending Colonial States Athletic Conference champions and a 2010 NCAA Division III national tournament qualifier, improved to 1-1 on the year. King's, meanwhile, stands at 0-1 after its first game of the season.
King's held its own in the early going and built leads of 8-5 and 10-7. After Lindsay Atchison scored to give the Lady Monarchs a 12-10 advantage with 11:20 left in the opening half, the Knights went on an 9-0 run to take a 19-12 lead following a Cecily Scavicchio with 9:10 remaining in the opening stanza. Neumann continued to slowly build the lead, aided greatly by 17 offensive rebounds in the first half. The Knights took a 34-19 lead at the half when Katie Young converted a pair of foul shots with no time remaining in the half.
In the second half King's cut the lead to 35-23, but Neumann responded with a 12-2 run over a 7:49 span to push the score to 47-25 led with 10:59 left in the contest. The Lady Monarchs made one last push to come within 54-41 following a lay-up by Katlin Michaels with 7:10 go, but the Knights countered with an 11-2 surge to extend the lead to 65-43 with 3:21 on the clock.
Krista DiRomualdo led the Knights with 16 points and five rebounds while Young posted a double-double with 11 points and 14 boards. Scavicchio chipped in with 10 points and fours assists. The Knights shot 36.1 (26-72) percent from the floor compared to 28.1 (18-64) for King's. Both teams shot poorly from the foul line with Neumann going 11-for-22 while King's finished 10-21. Neumann owned a decisive 62-42 rebounding advantage while snaring 25 offensive rebounds, compared to 16 for King's.
The Lady Monarchs were led by Michaels with 13 points and five rebounds while Celia Rader followed with nine points and two boards. Lindsay Atchison came off the bench to net eight points with seven rebounds while Molly Dahl contributed six points and eight boards. Samantha Simcox finished with four points and seven rebounds.
King's returns to action Saturday and Sunday at the Susquehanna University Invitational. The Lady Monarchs face Pitt-Bradford Saturday at 6:00 p.m. King's will then travel to face the University of Scranton Tuesday at 7:000 p.m.
