Lady Monarchs Win Pepsi-Weis Tourney with 88-79 Victory over Susquehanna as Rader Earns MVP Honors

KING'S WOMEN WIN PEPSI/WEIS TOURNEY TILE WITH 88-79 VICTORY OVER HOST SUSQUEHANNA
 
SELINSGROVE -- The King's College women's basketball team overcame a 40-36 halftime deficit by outscoring host Susquehanna University 52-39 over the game's final 20 minutes of play as the Lady Monarchs captured the Pepsi-Weis Markets Invitational Tournament with a 88-79 victory Sunday in Selinsgrove.

With the win, King's improved to 2-1 on the year while Susquehanna slipped to 1-2.

King's put together its best first half of a game thus far this season thanks to 46.9 (15-32) percent shooting and 14 points from paige Carlin, but still trailed 40-36 at the break.

In the seocnd half the teams swapped baskets for nearly four minutes but when Erika Barron hit a three-pointer for the Crusaders, King's trailed 48-43 with 16:32 to play.

The Lady Monarchs used a 10-4 run, keyed by two foul shots by Katlin Michaels, and three-pointers from Lindsay Atchison and Celia Rader as King's took a 53-52 lead with 14:37 on the clock.  Susquehanna countered with a 10-6 surge to build a 62-58 aadvantage following another trey by Barron with 10:34 to go.

King's would begin attacking the basket and the strategy paid off as the Lady Monarchs began getting to the foul line. Molly Dahl made two free throws while Michaels and Rader made one-of-two charity tosses apiece to bring the Lady Monarchs to within 63-62 at the 7:50 mark.

After Gina Palzaai of Susquehanna made one-of-two foul shots, Rader drained a big three-pointer for King's to give the Lady Monarchs a 65-64 lead. Rachel Hughes answered for the Crusaders with a jumper, but Brittany Muscatell responded for King's with another three-poiner as the Lady Monarchs led 68-66 with 6:46 on the clock. Hughes tied the game at 68-68 with a layup momenets later, but King's used consecutive three-pointers by Carissa Gegaris and Rader to push the King's lead to 74-70 with 5:43 to play.

Susquehanna eventually cut the lead to 76-75 with 3:07 remaining on a Palzazzi lay-up, but Carlin scored back-to-back baskets and Rader made two foul shots to stretch the Lady Monarch advantage to 82-75 with 1:55 to go.

The Crusaders cut the score to 82-77 on a Palazzi jumper at 1:34, but King's put the game away with a driving lay-up from Atchison, one-of-two foul shots from Muscatell, and three-of-four charity tosses by Carlin over the final 0:29 of the game.

Rader finished the game with 26 points, including 21 in the second half to earn tournament most valuable plauer honors while Carlin, who also earned a spot on the all-tournament team, finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Dahl contributed 16 points and seven boards while Atchison tallied nine points and seven rebounds. Michaels posted seven points and six boards while Muscatell chipped in with six points and four assists.

King's finished the game shooting 46.8 (29-62) oercent from the field and made 81.5 (22-27) from the foul line.

Palazzi led all scores with 29 points and 15 rebounds while Barron and Hughes added 11 and 18 points respectively. No other Cruasder, however would score more than four points in the game.

King's returns to action Tuesday when the Lady Monarchs face ther University of Scranton at 7:00 p.m. in the John Long Center.
