Lady Monarchs Make Superb Comeback Only to Fall in OT to Widener

KING'S WOMEN FALL ON ROAD TO WIDENER IN OVERTIME, 95-89
 
CHESTER -- The King's College women's basketball team overcame a 14-point deficit with just over five minutes to play before rallying to send the game into overtime. Once there, the Lady Monarchs ran out of gas, falling to host Widener University 95-89 Monday night in Chester.

With the loss, King's fell to 2-3 on the year while Widener improved to 5-1. 
 
The first half was played at a back-and-forth pace with Widener holding a 34-30 lead with 1:35 left in the half. But the Pride closed out the remainder of play with a 8-1 spurt, keyed by two foul shots each from Lindsay Pepino and Vanessa Hejnas, as well as a bucket with 0:04 left by Alyssa Wigging, giving Widener a 42-31 lead at the break.
In the second half maintained a 11-point lead when Joanna Persiano scored with 17:28 left to push the Widener lead to 46-35.

King's countered with a bucket and foul shot by Samantha Simcox, a short jumper by Katlin Michaels, and one-of-two foul shots from Paige Carlin to cut the lead to 46-41 with 15:27 to go.

After a Widener bucket, Michaels made one-of-two charity tosses before Brittany Muscatell and Michaels followed with back-to-back layups to bring King's to within 48-46 with 13:00 remaining.

Widener responded with a 24-12 surge over the next eight minutes to seemingly put the game away as the Pride build a 72-58 advantage with 5:03 left.

King's, however, refused to quit and the Lady Monarchs mounted a furious comeback. Two foul shots form Molly Dahl and a bucket and foul shot by Celia Rader brought King's to within 72-63 at the 3:32 mark. Rader then made two more foul shots before Michaels added one-of-two free throws to cut the margin to 72-66 with 2:40 to play.

After Widener pushed the score to 75-67 with 2:04 on the clock, Paige Carlin buried a three-pointer, then made a pair of foul shots to bring the Lady Monarchs within 75072 with 1:48 remaining.

After a Widener bucket, Rader drained a three-pointer with 1:30 on the clock to cut the lead to 77-75. After Jes Abraguin of Widener made one-of-two foul shots to push the Widener lead to 78-75 with 1:17 left, the teams traded misses over the next three possessions. Following Widener last miss at 0:11, King's moved the ball up court looking for the game-tying shot. Rader took a pass from Muscatell and launched a three pointer that rang true with 0.06 left, tying the contest at 78-78 and sending the game into overtime.
 

From there, Widener came out of the gates with a 8-2 run and took a 86-80 lead after an Abraguin three-pointer with 2:12 left.  Widener maintained a 90-85 lead on a pair of foul shots by Lauren Carson with 0:36 left but Carlin answered with a three-pointer to bring the Lady Monarchs to within 90-88 with 0:30 to play. 

Carney then made one-of-two foul shots before Atchison countered with one-of-two charity tosses as Widener clung to a 91-89 lead with 0:20 to go. But Vanessa Hejnas scored with 0:16 remaining to give the Pride a 93-89 advantage. King's then commit a costly turnover with 0:10 left and the Lady Monarchs quickly fouled Hejnas, who sealed the game by making both foul shots with 0:07 on the clock.

Carlin paced King's with 28 points, six rebounds, going  14-18 at the foul line. Michaels followed with 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, while Rader added 14 points. Atchison contributed 11 points and eight rebounds while Muscatell chipped in with nine points, seven rebounds, and two assists.
 
 
Widener was led by Jen Egee with 16 points and five rebounds. Carney followed with 15 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Hejnas chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds for the Pride.

King's returns to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. matchup at Eastern University.
